...but I wouldn't want it all to merge into the U of Mississippi system and everyone have to become Rebels.

If there was some way to merge us all and it not become Ole Miss, I might be in favor of it. Would I be in favor if we all merged into the U of Mississippi and got rid of "Ole Miss" and Rebels? Maybe, barely, possibly, but it would have to be a formal declaration of "We are no longer Ole Miss". But what would we do with the Oxford and Starkville campuses?

It's not gonna happen anyway.

No offense, but what special type of education does the W offer that distinguishes it from any other university? MSU would be glad to have its nursing school, and I could easily see EMCC and MSU operating some type of joint campus in Columbus, for continuing ed classes, etc.

would be a huge, huge gain for MSU. Other than that, MUW has a pretty good culinary arts program - the rest is duplicated in Starkville.

If it happened, it wouldn't just close MUW and move everything to Starkville - that campus would still operate but as a large satellite campus like Meridian or USM-Gulf Coast. I think folks are starting to realize if you are going to have to take all the MUW signage down to replace it with Reneau or whatever, and now their president has quit - you might as well change the signage to MSU-Columbus and get rid of a lot of administrative costs.

That's what I am hearing as well. The MVSU-Delta State thing makes as much sense, but it will be fought fiercely.

loose its identity and merge with any of the other big two in any fashion. Mississippi State will always be in Starkville and Ole Miss will always be in Oxford. All 10 of Southern's fans will be able to go see the Mustard Birds in The Hat.

How so? They are funded the same way the other state universities in Mississippi are, as far as I know. There are schools in the country that are a combination of private and state funded departments/colleges/departments but I'm unaware of any such arrangement at Ole Miss. I would be shocked to see UM make a move to private. Who in their right mind would pay the $20,000+/year in tuition that would likely be needed to fund the school for practically the same education you could get at state for $5,000/year, or whatever it is now.

but it is possible that Mississippi goes like Louisiana, Tennessee and Alabama. The College Board would govern all colleges except for UM and UM would govern itself, and possibly one other campus. I think thats what is meant by the private talk. Private like the University of Tennessee and University of Alabama, not private like Vanderbilt and Tulane.

So UT, Bama and LSU all get state money but get to make their own decisions and you think such an arrangement could happen with Ole Miss? That is ********. The big three either need their own Boards of Trustees to run the schools or everyone needs to be under the IHL. Period. None of this "we'll leave Ole Miss alone but still tell MSU who to hire, etc."

I agree, but at least they are still technically under the control of IHL. We all simply need our own Boards to replace IHL and go from there.

just explaining that the talk about becoming private was not becoming Vanderbilt.

The HBCUs want to govern themselves as well. This may be the best thing we could ask for other than our own board of trustees.

The HBCUs would have their own board of trustees
UM would have their own board of trustees
MSU, USM and Delta State would have a board of trustees.

At first glance it sucks, but if you think about it for a second its not too bad, compared to what we have now, a UM favorable board followed by have to make the HBCUs happy followed by State, Delta State and USM.

was for each institution to have a seperate board of trustees. To be honest, the IHL is unbelievably political historically, as is the way they give out money. There is reputed to be a large slush fund allocated by the legislature the the IHL itself has control over where and how it is spent. And you can bet we take a real screwing on that.

when I said "sort of private". I think 615 Dawg is probably right on what the "Private" rumors mean, not like Vandy.

and the JUCO "satellite" campuses. It's amazing how much public money the JUCO system gobbles up. You need some, not twenty.

but merging MUW with MSU is starting to get more serious talk ..

It'll be a cold day in Hell before any university in this state gets closed. I think that an MSU-MUW is the most likely to occur. I personally think that MUW and MVSU should be closed or merged since they are (I believe) the two smallest 4-year universities we have in the state, but the Legislature will never do it.

inside the Ole Miss alumni that want to get rid of Rebels and Dixie. They would still keep Ole Miss but I wouldn't be surprised if you start hearing a more vocal call for change there.
