Howland part 2
He is nothing close to what Howland was here. Howland got a **** ton of talent. Problem is Howlands talented players under performed big time as a team. Should have a tournament realistically year 2 and 3. We didn’t make the dance until year 4 and underperformed again year 5. All downhill after that.

With Jans it was a miracle his first team made it to the tournament . Hell of a coaching job that year. His second team gained some talent and played about at the level they should have. I hate that we got bounced in the first round that year but I can live with it. Last year he had the pieces for a sweet 16 team. Very impressive start to the year but the Kentucky game broke us. After that we were a lot softer and it seems like he lost the team. Underperformed big time and got bounced again. Not a good result considering the pieces we had. Now we look straight up lost except Hubbard and Epps

Jans from like 2 years ago would have done much better with that type of talent imo. I do think he’s fading right now and it seems in some ways he doesn’t want to be here

Thinking about last years team and 2018-2019 makes me pretty pissed. I hate underperforming so much. 2019-2020 was like that too but got bailed out by Covid.

The problem is Jans can’t get the same defensive effort he once got here. His first team played with so much relentless defensive effort it made it fun to watch even though it ugly basketball. At that time the nickname the dentist made a ton of sense. His teams have gotten so far away from that, you wouldn’t even think it was the same coach as his first year. In the last few years the defense has been pretty much nonexistent.

Seems like players get worse at shooting the ball once they arrive here. What’s the deal with that? It’s as if someone on staff is teaching some bad mechanics, and it’s messing with their shot. I see a ton of total side of the backboard nowhere close shots. Misses should be long or short not that far left or right. I’m pretty convinced these guys are straight up getting their shot tweaked and it’s making them worse not better

I’ve had enough of this clown show really

He occasionally, and sometimes often, meets the minimum to keep his job at Mississippi State. That’s why he’s here instead of at a school with a good program.

We are Mississippi State.

His defense gives too many open 3s. Every team we face has one of their best 3p shooting days against us. And if we have the ball for the final possession, you can guarantee we won’t make it. We absolutely suck at late game offense. Not mediocre, we are one of the worst teams I’ve ever seen at finishing and have been his entire tenure.

Won at New Mexico State by recruiting juco and transfers with checkered pasts, who had chips on their shoulders, which fit in perfect with his defense first, grind it out mentality. Struggled mightily on offense at that school. Never really was known as an X and O guy or developer of talent.

Fast forward here and we are seeing the same thing. Struggles with managing a roster and different personalities. Struggles with connecting to players strengths. Struggles with developing an offensive system that can put players in position to succeed, especially in critical/clutch situations. He wins when he has one, sometimes two, primary scorer take over a game on his own. But not because of the offensive system in place.

Not a consistent plan or path to success moving forward

Yeah last year’s roster had no business finishing below .500 in conference play.

That’s what I’m feeling too. He probably thought last year’s team was his chance to get a bigger job but he didn’t deliver so feels like he checked out. No excuse for this year’s team. Looks like he didn’t even try in the portal.

My opinion has always been that the love affair of many fans in the early days was overdone and he was going to be limited by his obvious deficiencies coaching offense.

And now they don't play defense.

If his specialty is defense, he has done a horrendous job getting defenders in for his system.

If it isnt his specialty, he sucks as a coach because relying on Hubbard for all the points has been skating up hill.

The effort isn't there on the defensive end like it was his first couple of years. Whether that's on him or on the players is hard to tell. We do not have the talent this year that we have had under him to date. My understanding that the incoming group may rectify that to some degree. We will see.

I don’t think he knows what he’s doing on offense, we’ve never looked good on that end. His defense seems to value doubling in the post and leaving guys wide open from 3 which is a disaster in this day and age. I also question his ability to scout talent. Then there are rumors that a lot of guys simply do not like playing for him. I think this is going downhill fast. He will get next year to fix it but if he doesn’t then what do we do? Our facilities are old and at the bottom of the league, our fan support is terrible and this is one of the few places in the country where baseball is prioritized over basketball. I don’t see much hope here at all.

I think Jan’s is okay, he needs an offensive assistant coach who will install a more efficient offense that will generate points. He clearly wasn’t given adequate NIL money to restock the roster in the offseason, that’s not really on him.

He had plenty of nil. Our basketball boosters are some of the most organized in the league. He just can't recruit and a lot of players don't want to play for him. It takes a special player to put up with his "style". Murphy and Nwoko hit the road because of it.

Roster retention is a big issue for him too.
I like Jans, but he's got this year as a mulligan. If he can't fix it next season, he'll be gone.

Very doubtful. It’s a pay for play game. 44th ranked portal class is low budget.

LSU is 6-0. Nwoko had 14 last night.

Not playing D is absolutely on the coach. You ever remember any Vic Schaefer coached team, even the bad early ones, that didn't give max effort on D??

Why? I went to a few and watched a few, but it was women’s basketball. I never watched the nuts and bolts type of games.

It's a sport here to flex about disinterest in women's basketball, even a team that almost won it all.

So...not shocking that you weren't paying attention to how great a D coach he was and still is, as evidenced by whipping South Carolina yesterday.

This was just a lost season. I think he wanted out and didn't and then his heart wasn't in the portal game. That or he and his staff has serious talent evaluation issues.

It was said that we took such a big step back on defense last year that we'd try to fix that. But the guys we brought in aren't good at defense or offense. It's like we just grabbed decent players but there was no plan on how they fit together. When I watched film of guys we even brought in for visits, only a couple of them seem to fit the mold and I really shook my head at some guys we took. But I tried to give the benefit of the doubt b/c he should know way more than I do.

However, this team just looks so bad right now on both ends that I just wonder what the heck happened.

At least with the girls it was said we gave Sam zero money so it made some sense that we had to shop in the bargain bin. Jans got enough money to put together a team capable of making the tournament.

Yea, I’m thinking we need to be patient. He seems to be recruiting much better at the HS level than portal. If he can get one Epps a year from the portal and sign and keep the level HS’ers he’s bringing in now I think we’ll be good. But it may take another year or two.
