Not only did the gunner visibly try to let up when he saw the signal, he was blocked in the back into the guy by the defender. Never-the-less, that's 35 free yards Bama has gotten in the first quarter.

And the first questionable one. But he was within a yard of the return man

But the gunner was 5 yards from the return man when he threw up the signal.

He was running full speed at the guy thinking he was not going to call fair catch. By rule, he is granted protection, but the gunner HAS to be given the benefit of the doubt for the signal coming so late in the kick. Maybe if he had not tried to let up, I would have flagged him, but he visibly tried to let up while getting blocked into him. That should not have been flagged. He couldn't do anything else.
