It’s hard for me to say we should expect to make the Sweet 16 frequently when the historical precedent is just not there. 95 and 96, that’s literally it. And they’re both coming up on 30 years ago.

I would say what Jans is doing is meeting expectations. Other than his first year I wouldn’t really say he’s exceeded expectations that much.

I think I’m pretty much in agreement with DS. You should be in the tourney 75% of the time here.

Make the tournament not every year but frequently and when you have supposed good teams like we were made to think this year, Win some games in the tournament and not be one and done. Us not winning a tournament game since the early 2000's is a failure in my opinion

Expectations and goals arent the same.

How I know-
- 18 years in an office where we continually efforted to discover actionable efficiencies through collaboration with a goal to add value.
- 18 years in an office where planning meetings and goal setting got in the way of getting work done and adding actual value.
SMART goals, FAST goals, PACT goals, CLEAR goals contain expectations that will allow the goals to be reached...and all those acronyms are proof that the Devil is very much real in life.

Side rant aside...
I expect the team to win games they are rated to win and win a couple they are rated to lose.
I think a goal of making the tournament 75% of the time is pretty lofty(given history), but is good to set because it should feel good to reach a goal.

So what do you do if you don't? Do you move on? I would never even consider it.

If we go 3 seasons without a NCAA tournament bid - I would be for moving on to a different coach.
Yeah I think that's a good way of thinking about it. I don't expect jans to make a sweet 16 within 4 years. Within 8? That seems like a reasonable goal.

- Have a one or two marquee wins each year (OM does not count unless they are ranked in the top 10)
- Don't get blown out by 30 at all and especially not multiple times (show some fight, even in losses)
- Make the tourney, win a game or two every three or four years.

Not exactly sure if I have any metrics, but my expectations are higher in basketball than any other sport. It's much easier to field a competitive team (less $) because you can get by with 2 or 3 really good players and some complementary pieces. I think we have a really good head coach, but can't comment on the assistants. We have 11 coaches under Jans, 5 with the title of "Assistant Men's Basketball Coach." That doesn't include 5 GAs. I don't really have an opinion on any of the assistants. I'm just asking the question....are we lacking there?

Be competent enough to keep the students engaged. I'm guessing that's a tournament berth 2/3s of the time.

Be competitive every year and make the tournament every 2-3 years if more frequent, gravy. Not be one and done every six years. Make a Sweet Sixteen once a decade.

That’s where State can be and not ask a lot and it’s reasonable expectations.

NIT
NIT
NCAA
NCAA
Best team in the 5 year stretch

another dip is coming... so i guess you throw in 1 bad season.. or under the norm season and thats what i'd think a 6 year stretch to look like here.

2016-17 was the last of a 5 year stretch of the Stans/Ray debacle. Ever since then we’ve been a good to solid program and that’s where our floor is for an 8 year stretch.
17/18 NIT
18/19 NCAA
19/20 COVID probably NIT but NCAA was possible
20/21 NIT
21/22 Howland year 7 underachieving NIT
22/23 Jans year 1 overachieving NCAA
23/24 NCAA
24/25 NCAA
Obviously we need to start winning in March but averaging 8-10 SEC wins a year and being on the bubble or better for a majority of the last decade is nothing to scoff at especially post Stans

Mine are make the tournament 75% of the time. That's batting above our historical average but that should be our goal.
If by expectations, you mean what does it take for a coach to keep his job, I would say a tournament appearance every three years.

If by expectations, you mean what do I expect from Jans, I expect him to make the tourney 75% of the time and win a tournament game at least one of those years, and have a sweet 16 at least once every 8 years. My expectations of tournament success are actually a little higher than that, but trying to not get ahead of myself.

Win more than we lose. Protect the home floor, no matter the opponent. All the good teams struggle at home occasionally but rarely. We should be no different. Win the games we are supposed to win 9 out of 10 times. When we lose, lose competitively, see: 111-73. Look like a well coached team even in defeat. Remember there are 3 areas of the floor to defend!

Otherwise, continue to be the "buffer" sport between Football and Baseball like it has been for the past 30 years and mostly for 65 years beyond the glory days of late 50's to early 60's.
