Does anyone on here go to Biloxi/Gulfport beach? Other than an ocean view, I think its mostly a disappointment. The islands further out don't allow as much fresh water to be brought in from what I hear, so its noticeably dirtier water than beaches farther east. I do see people down there though, probably locals mostly and folks who mainly came to hit the casinos I bet. The last time I went to a beach in Biloxi, it seemed like the sand was really dirty with cigarette butts and trash scattered everywhere. Yuck...

The Naval air museum is a must see on the Pensacola base if you haven't been.

Also for the people going to destin, the Elgin AFB armament museum is awesome too. I stood in front of the Sensor Fused Weapon display and just kept thinking that it was some kind of demented mind that came up with that. Oh yea, and the Coach and Four Steakhose on Briley Parkway, fort walton is a decent steak house to get away from the tourist traps and when you get tired of seafood. It looks rough from the outside but it's ok. Appeared they were doing some work on the building.

did the Seaside thing when the kids got out of school in May and will be headed back for second week of July.......

Please don't take your family to the beach in MS - they'll hate you for it - you may as well take them to the nearest pond. As a matter of fact - I haven't gone to the AL coast in years due to Seaside, San Destin being soo much nicer. Beach, water clarity etc.....is worth the extra 1 hour drive in my opinoin.....

I'm planning a trip with the wife to either Fort Walton, Destin, or Panama City Beach this time next year. Which of those cities do you guys prefer best? From what I hear, Panama City is the party town, Destin is the more upscale of the three, and Fort Walton is the most laid back. Right now I'm favoring Fort Walton because of it sounding more quiet between the three, plus it's a shorter drive from Waynesboro, MS. I've always gone to the Alabama beaches, but I hear the water is bluer and the sand whiter once you get into Florida. What do you guys think?

I agree 100% - there are alot of people that swear by Orange Beach - it is closer and most the times cheaper....but you cannot beat the beaches of South Walton (San Destin East to Rosemary).
We were at Seaside in mid-May and some friends were on the beach at Gulf Shores, AL - water clarity was not comparable - AL was mercy and dark while Seaside was crystal blue....

Great food and the best beaches on the panhandle = beaches of South Walton - 30A is hard to beat. Another 1 hour drive east past Orange Beach

We go to Rosemary Beach every year, I agree it can't be beat in this area. Orange Beach / Fort Morgan are great if you only have a weekend and don't want to drive so far. I would love to know how you get from Orange Beach to Seaside in 1 hour.

I went to Ft. Walton/Desitin area last year for the first time in 30 years or so (been going to the Perdido area all this time). The water and beaches were beautiful and the place was pretty in an HGTV/yuppie kind of way that my wife likes. But, there is way, way too damn many people and cars down there for me. I could not get over the traffic jams and crowds. And I thought Innerarity Point had gotten way too crowded - its deserted compared to Ft. Walton/Destin.

Are there any more quiet rural beach towns with a rusty boat fish shack like Destin used to be? How about down toward Appalachicola(sp?)? Any ideas?

Good point, this place is off the chart popular and does crowd up at times....

Mexico Beach (east of Panama City towards Apalachicola from what I have heard is the new beach bum (leave the 17 alone and let me drink) hot spot....we had some AL boys by us at Seaside in May and he told me that was the place to go....

I have not been there - my wife is in love with Seaside...please report back if you go.

Coach N Four is on Lewis Turner Blvd. That same road is called Beal Parkway once you get south of Racetrack Road. Another good place in FWB is called Buffalo Reef. Great wings and cold beer.

Love Grayton--go every year and stay (with 4 other families...) at that house cattycornered to the Red Bar. Hurricane Oyster Bar is great too. Nice new place called Bravo Whiskey in Seaside that has a killer sun set view.

I meant Beal. Got my Parkways mixed up. I was actually going to try Buffalo Reef but never made it over.

yah, I have been down near tulum several times. I really like it south of playa, and Playa has a neat feel to it. Lots of cigar bars and such. A corona commercial was filmed there. I have stayed a week at the Blue Bay Esmerelda before. First time for golfing though. Myacoba is right up the street where they have the PGA tour event.
Great area, watch out for the saltwater crocodiles. While snorkeling I saw more big fish than any where else, several grouper and a couple of baracuda.

I haven't been to the Alabama shore since long before the FloraBama got blown away as the biggest draw to stay around there, but we've booked a FtMorgan house this summer based on a lot of similar rec's from many, many people. I hope y'all are right... God help us, we're in the middle of nowhere....

I had a lakefront cabin booked on Lake Cumberland, KY for a week in July, but I canceled it. My two young kids wanted a puppy instead and the breed the wife picked out was almost the same price as the weekly cabin rental. Will probably do a long weekend in Destin and spend some time on the houseboat in Vancleave instead. Me and the wife are headed to Orange Beach for a few nights to see Dave Matthews in July too...

Doubtful that it was placed for recreational uses, jetties are placed to prevent sediment migration, usually into a navigation channel.

Headed to Panama City beach mid July for a week.

The clearest water is from about Pensacola though Panama City beach. Will never go back to orange beach/gulf shores.

Went out to shell island on the Far East end of PCB and that was some of the clearest water I've ever seen.

Pcb isn't too bad as far as partying goes in the middle of the summer.

We usually shop at pier park and drive to the outlets/mall in destin.

i like pcb in summer. Pier park is pretty cool and there is exceptionally good dining across the bridge in Panama City.

Im referring to the finger jetty, not to 2 big jetties that make the channel to the bay. It looks to have no purpose other the snorkeling.

Orange Beach in early July, San Destin in early August, then Grayton Beach in early September(no kids).
