I don't get why UL fans are pushing the Pitino didn't know argument. In a way, wouldn't that still be as bad as knowing about the situation? It shows there was no control over the staff/players outside of the basketball arena, and it was a free for all. Youre talking about a coach who constantly touts how he has strict player liability and knows what is going on in his program 24/7...except for the 4 year brothel that was being ran in a university sanctioned players dorm. I've been in locker rooms many times, and I know you always have those guys who are constantly talking about the sexual exploits, so I have a hard time Pitino never overheard something regarding that. I just can't give him that type of pass, I think he chose to just ignore it.

Either way you slice it, it's bad for Pitino. Either he knew and chose to ignore it, or he really didn't know and showed a complete lack of Institutional control. You can't convince me on or the other is any better.

The slimy ,immoral, cheating, win at all cost UL Fans are grasping at any straw to keep Pitino because they know they won't be able to replace him very easily.
It shows what a sick bunch they are for condoning the things that have and will continue to go on there as long as they win some games.
Last time I checked,it never mattered to the NCAA if a Head Coach knew or didn't know about the infractions for the athletic program in violation to be punished, but it usually does matter to Alumni and Fans if they have an honest, trustworthy Coach and Program instead of a Lying,Cheating,Win At All Costs POS like Pitino and UL

If someone only went back through the public statements Pitino has made since this story came out last summer, you could easily find 3 or 4 Lies he made in that time, and see how he has changed his story as everything developed.
Nobody can tell me that two dozen recruits Pitino brought to campus ,had sex parties without Pitino knowing one thing about where they were and what went on.

This is exactly why the "new" information, if it turns out to be true, is so important. If they could only corroborate a few parties, then the institutional control issue and Pitino's oversight problem would not be as egregious. But if what sources are now saying is true -- specifically, that up to 24 players/recruits have now confirmed the parties over several years, including several that have confirmed sex -- then Pitino and the program really have no defense. Even if he didn't know the true nature and extent of the parties, it is impossible to say he had control over his program if that many parties, of that nature, happened so many times. Willful ignorance simply won't fly when the parties were so rampant.

Rick has a 50 million buyout on the line. I'm guessing that might be sufficient reason for him to lie.
and sufficient reason for UL to not fire him ,I read it was in his contract that he couldn't be held accountable for people under him when they committed illegal acts, tells me he knew what was going on and covered his *** in his latest contract extension.

Here's a copy and paste of that mess. This isn't getting its' just due. That is one delusional bunch of morons over at little brothel. Seriously, he wants you to replay the videos to "facial expression experts". Maybe he should hire a tarot card reader too. Either Pitino is blackmailing them or this guy is totally off his rocker.

Last week, in my official role as Chairman of the University of Louisville Board of Trustees, I released a statement and the first part of it reads:

"As Chairman of the University of Louisville Board of Trustees, I am deeply convinced that the NCAA findings will clear Coach Rick Pitino of any knowledge of the alleged scandal."

I received numerous messages through various outlets, most of them very complimentary and understanding. Others questioned my conviction, including the question of my access to the NCAA investigation. Let me set the record straight.

I have no access to the investigation reports, interviews, or findings. I do know that there are three parts of this process - investigative, reporting, and remediation. I believe that at some point the report is shared with the university president and the board chairman. Frankly, no one has a clue as to when that will happen - certainly not soon enough.

I do not use the words “deeply convinced” very often. My beliefs are a product of my own conclusions after contemplating the issue. I am proud to provide my justification.

First and foremost, I take Coach Pitino at his word. At many public and media venues he has vehemently denied any knowledge and he has provided adequate reasons. Who are we to question? His media presence, integrity, and honesty are undeniable. Understanding that this old fashioned “face” value doesn’t work for some, I ask that you replay the videos to facial expression experts who are unbiased and let them render their opinion.

Does a man in his late 50s (when the alleged allegations took place) who has taken three different teams to Final Fours, multiple conference championships and a national championship with an unscathed record in major infractions suddenly wake up and think his team needs a recruiting edge off the court to take them to a new level? Scientific research tells us that in regards to reputation, one becomes more risk averse as they age, not more risky and that is easy to understand. Why ruin a career or a reputation when you have already created a legendary biography as a coach?

While the general population does not know Coach Pitino, they know his type as nearly everyone has been around highly successful CEOs, managers, coaches, and teachers. They are “type A” perfectionists and strivers, who exhibit endless grit and relentless work ethic. They take their awards and accomplishments and trophies, celebrate them and put them on the shelf to go further. They delegate and trust their direct reports to do their job so that they can focus their strengths on their highest value.

Contrary to popular belief, you do not get to the Hall of Fame by micromanaging. You achieve success by setting a vision, managing your resources, building your co-workers, and practicing incredible focus.

High achievers like Coach Pitino simply get better at getting better. You don’t abandon these ways as you mature; you refine them. Judging by Coach Pitino’s prolific coaching tree, his management style and techniques work.

Can you get a rogue co-worker at least once in your career that violates trust? Yes. Can you assign a guard to every 17- to 22-year-old kid and honestly believe they won’t find a way around them to engage in activities of their choosing? Unlikely. Isn’t it more plausible that there was some criminal invasion on that part of the campus unknown to any authority?

Lastly, the use of empathy also vindicates Coach Pitino. The qualities to real empathy - perspective taking, emotion sharing, and prosocial concern - are all contained within an environment of non-judgment that eliminates bias. Take an imaginary leap into Coach Pitino’s life at the time he lost his best friend and brother-in-law Billy Minardi to ruthless terrorists on 9/11. Imagine what it felt like to be helpless in the search for your friend in the rubble of the World Trade Center and eventually come to the truth of his demise. You cry, you suffer, you cope and lead family as a friend, relative and an uncle.

Through post-traumatic recovery you find a way to honor him - an annual basketball tournament. You raise money and funds to build a state-of-the-art dormitory that is shared by the student population and your players. The beautiful building is called “Minardi Hall.” You are irreparably marred but you have permanently honored and this gives you some comfort.

It is inconceivable to me that anybody could conclude that Coach Pitino had any knowledge of any unseemly alleged events occurring in Minardi Hall.

I am deeply convinced.

The opinions in this article are mine and are not meant to reflect any organization of which I am a part.
What in the hell is an alleged allegation?

Its pretty sad when a board member of a "major" university writes like that.
True dat. I found his "op-ed" to be rather hilarious. When I first heard that the Board chairman was supporting Pitino, I thought to myself that perhaps they have information from the investigation that actually demonstrates a lack of knowledge by Pitino. Then I read the basis for his support (i.e., the op-ed) and about fell out of my chair. It is basically a message board post, and reads like a kid explaining why Santa Claus has to be real.

I had someone who worked for RP in some form or fashion tell me that he does not question that this went on at Mindardi Hall but there was no way RP would have let this go on under his watch at this revered Hall. Started telling me the relationship was so strong with Billy and RP. Hmm, didn't bother him to cheat on Billy's sister.

Not sure you can use the magical Mindardi name and reverence since RP cheated on his sister with same last name. So yeah I think this sacred Mindardi Hall excuse is BS.

I don't believe it reads exactly like that.

Here is a good read about his morals contract.

Here are some pertinent parts of his contract. Read the whole thing here.

Here is the link to the entire contract. Easy to argue that he did not act in a "diligent" manner pertaining to Andre McGee's recruiting tactics if they involved over two dozen players covering four years.

EDIT: that's hard to read isn't it? Go read the real thing.

David Padgett, who is married to the daughter of Pitino's best buddy Ron Carmicle, was promoted to assistant coach minutes after UL's last game of the season at UVA. It is unheard of to make such a promotion so soon after the end of the season, particularly with such uncertainty about the future of the program.

This random promotion quietly doubles Padgett's salary and ensures that he is paid over a million when Pitino and his staff are terminated or negotiate an exit. Pitino and Carmicle have a long history of, ahem, "guys trips". The code of silence between the two is strong.

This how it works at UL. La Familia.

Good point Ken. I had heard someone mention that his promotion was out of the ordinary. Kind of like the Tim Sypher $100,000 bonus he got to marry Karen. I believe that bonus was more than his normal salary. It was given by the boosters though and not the school. [winking][eyeroll]

If there had been only 1 or 2 "parties" at Minardi Hall I could possibly believe that Pitino might not know. But it happened 22 times. There is no possible way that the wool was pulled over his eyes that many times. Not a micro manager like Slick Rick.

Bottom line, he knew about it. He maybe didn't authorize it but he knew.

Is the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney still investigating this matter? I find it hard to believe the NCAA will pass any judgement so long as there may be criminal indictments pending.

If that were the case, the prosecutor in Chapel Hill would've started "digging" a long time ago.

"No, no, NCAA. We're on the verge of cracking the case! Just give us another couple of years to investigate!"

Besides, it would be odd to allow the elected prosecutor for the city of Louisville to determine whether and when the NCAA moves forward. It's the kind of conflict of interest that UL seems to have thrived on for the last decade or so, but it's far too transparent in this instance.

Bottom line--The law and the NCAA's rules are completely different animals. The NCAA will move forward with UL when they've completed their investigation regardless of everything else that might come out later.

I think it's odd for all these folks at UofL (Benz, Prof. Ricky Jones, etc.) to be talking and drawing conclusions before the investigation is complete. Obviously a lot of different motives taking place. Not sure if this is a play to convince Pitino to return and sway public opinion, or for other reasons?

Also, funny that Benz is ready to can Dr. Ramsey before his many investigations are vetted, but thinks Rick should return before all facts have been produced.

In addition, that is pretty embarrassing stuff coming from the chair of a university's board. Using silly logic such as "any" CEO would never lie or cheat because it would tarnish their reputation. You have successful people make bad mistakes all the time. The leadership at UofL is in shambles. You get this NCAA mess, the FBI on campus and the Yum Center debacle with such poor leaders. Louisville is a great town, but I feel like it's really insulated and that has led to some really bad decisions at UofL.

Rick says they have the most compliant staff in the nation, then why are they self imposing a postseason ban? Can't believe that he is still their coach, now that there have been 3 CONFIRMED recruits that admit to receiving sex/strippers on their visits. Katina comes off surprisingly very articulate and things seem to have gotten personal between her and Rick.

The interview with John Barr (ESPN OTL) on the Deener show this morning basically explains everything. If you want to know the status of everything and want to be able to rebut anything Louisville fans are trying to say, listen to the interview. At least 8 players/recruits have confirmed the parties and at least 5 have confirmed paid sex, and that is just to ESPN. Much more than that discussed in the interview.
