I think if I look back through most of your post, they all have offensive comments or foul language, clean it up or move on to somewhere else. You have only been a member for 12 days. What's it got to do with the bottle 91. Unless you're drinking a big bottle.Maybe that's what you're trying to say.
The west is as weak as it's been in a long time, people are confusing parity with strength. The mountains are way down. There are several "solid" teams in the west this year but the only teams that would be contenders in a normal year are Mount Airy, Eastern Randolph and maybe Thomasville, in my opinion.again 1A West will be a beast come playoffs
Very true. We all thought the west would be loaded, but as the season has progressed it seems like it's a 3 horse race. Possibly even just 2, because Mount Airy hasn't played anyoneThe west is as weak as it's been in a long time, people are confusing parity with strength. The mountains are way down. I disagree. After seeing Andrew's last year I think they have to be considered a contender. Regardless of what has happened. I'm not so sure that these speed schools won't have problem with these Smoky mountain schools coming right at them. Don't get me wrong I'm not a fan of that brand of football just like I'm not a fan of the spread either but it's effective. I'm sure that Mitchell and mountain heritage are very good but I'd still say the Smoky mountain is the best. The west is as weak as it's been in a long time, people are confusing parity with strength. I understand what you’re saying and I’m not being argumentative BUT every time any of the big 3 lose 2 to 3 games they immediately start saying the conference is weak and it’s a down year. Baring any major injuries to key players I still believe Murphy, Robbinsville and Cherokee instead of Swain will make good runs come playoff time. I might be wrong but we will see how the next 3 weeks play out.The west is as weak as it's been in a long time, people are confusing parity with strength. The mountains are way down. Bc n Surry is 5 miles away and takes alot of kids and the charter school near MA schoolAfter making a trip to Mayberry this summer to see the Andy Griffith Museum and taking a tour in the squad car I can’t see how in the world that
My Airy is a 1A school !!! Population of 10,000 I believe.
Robbinsville and Murphy aren't as good as they were in the spring and neither are Mitchell or Heritage. I would agree that Andrews, Swain and Cherokee are better than they were in the spring but the traditional mountain powers of the last decade are not. Regardless none of the aforementioned 7 are title challengers in my opinion, they all have flaws that will keep them from seriously challenging for a title. I think most of the 7 could make it to a regional semifinal or maybe even final with the right draw but that's because outside of the 3 teams I mentioned earlier (Mount Airy, Eastern Randolph, Thomasville) there isn't any resistance.I understand what you’re saying and I’m not being argumentative BUT every time any of the big 3 lose 2 to 3 games they immediately start saying the conference is weak and it’s a down year. About 8600 =?- but point is well taken. More population within 5 miles of city limits than inside them. North Surry gets those students. After making a trip to Mayberry this summer to see the Andy Griffith Museum and taking a tour in the squad car I can’t see how in the world that

How many of them top athletes in N Surry district end up at MA or how many other Surry kids end up at MA over the years. Your 1A in name only. You pull from a 2A or 3A pond. If yall was 2A or 3A were you belong yunz wouldn't be heard from againAbout 8600 =?- but point is well taken. More population within 5 miles of city limits than inside them. This comment is absolutely hot air out some one's behind! For every one that in years past that came accross the creek to play at Mt Airy one or more went the other way. And none of that has been done in the past 10 to 15 years that I am aware of. And pal, Mt Airy does not shy away from ANYONE. Every year they play 2 to 3 schools from 2A or 3A. Please get your Facts correct. And last time I looked, Mt Airy has had no hand in whatever classification it found itself. The State makes that decision. How many of them top athletes in N Surry district end up at MA or how many other Surry kids end up at MA over the years. Your 1A in name only. Had several kids go to n Surry. Had few go to E Surry. The good linemen went to Tenn was from MA until suspended from fb. He transferred to ES so try again. How many of them top athletes in N Surry district end up at MA or how many other Surry kids end up at MA over the years. Your 1A in name only. Because they have Millennium CHARTER High School, White Plains Christian, & Surry HomeSchool, all pulling from Mount Airy and other county schools probably more so Mount Airy in some cases. Mount Airy/Mayberry has become a retirement community since Mayberry Days started in 1990 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Andy Griffith Show. The city a few years later started after starting to lose all our furniture factories and then around the 2000s the Hosiery Mills which made up our economy, started to make Mount Airy a retirement community to draw in retired people. I can remember in the 1960s & 70 our population was around 7,100 to 7,300. A lot of families moved out of the city to avoid city taxes and retired folks have moved in from other states. We old folks can't play football and there is a lot of us.After making a trip to Mayberry this summer to see the Andy Griffith Museum and taking a tour in the squad car I can’t see how in the world that

it is still the case that Flat Rock and Slate Mountain kids are driven through Mt Airy to get to North Surry High School. That would be the case with the entire Flat Rock Elementary School.Only city limits goes to MA (theoretically). So that population is similar to a county of 10K that all goes to one 1A high school. I have family from the Slate Mountain/Flat Rock area that would get bussed through Mount Airy city limits to go to a county high school years ago.
People hate greatness lol. These accusations come up every year.
And the video board coach.lolWhat you are missing is the economic support some high schools receive!! Gives them a major advantage! Compare coaches salaries, number of paid coaches on the staff, number of coaches paid for summer workouts, compare the weight rooms, compare the technology, or how often do they have their helmets reconditioned or painted!!!!???? There are many “have nots” in the 1-A level!!
Mount Airy gets a huge amount of backing from the booster, businesses & citizens. AS Buzz said, the video scoreboard, all the business signs around it the football field, probably 100 total different signs, and if I am right these businesses pay for the advertisement every year, and if you listen to the Bear games on both WSYD & WPAQ weekly, that is paid for by all the many businesses that are named throughout the games for the people that can't make it to the game and it is streamed out worldwide on the internet and people that went to Mount Airy are listening to the games from other states. Now I am not saying the school gets any of the radio advertising money because of the cost to broadcast 2 1/2 to 3+ hours including pre & post-game. Also, East Surry is a county school but inside the town of Pilot Mountain, and PM gives ES plenty of support. I'm not sure about Elkin or Surry Central's community support, I've never heard it talked about. What you are missing is the economic support some high schools receive!! Gives them a major advantage! Mitchell is spread out like a weeks washing. There is an element that I have stated over the years that I think makes a big advantage to urban schools over rural. Distance to and from! I played baseball and basketball in high school. 27 miles one way to my high school, , and I was not the furthest away.
Everyday when I left baseball practice I dropped off anywhere from 3 to 7 kids on my way home. My school system consolidated my sophomore year. I was closer to Statesville High, South Iredell, Davie County and West Rowan than I was to North Iredell.
You really have to want to play to do the things necessary to play if you are in a very rural area.
All my Babe Ruth AllStar team mates were from Statesville or South Iredell. Same with American Legion only adding Mooresville and Taylorsville to that.
Oh how I wanted to just be able to walk a couple of blocks to play Babe Ruth rather than the 7 miles I walked twice a week just to play baseball. In Mount Airy I think the furthest student might be 1 to 1.5 miles away, maybe.
I believe that is a real advantage.
Nothing unreal about it at all. You either live in the MA school district or you don’t. If you are in the MA school district you pay an added school tax, just like Elkin City Schools.MAHS is located pretty much in the downtown area; Lovills Creek runs right behind the HS….the other side of that creek belongs to Surry county….our district is unreal…as some have mentioned the County buses basically go right by the Middle school to get to Gentry Middle and pass within 1 1/2 miles of MAHS….
You don't have a clue do you old manNothing unreal about it at all. You either live in the MA school district or you don’t. If you are in the MA school district you pay an added school tax, just like Elkin City Schools.
Lexington has the same process…a property tax approved by the county commissioners. Not sure how it happened, but Thomasville’s school supplement tax doesn’t require commissioner approval, but only a vote of city council. With Davidson County’s known stinginess for education spending, that’s a good thing.ELKIN and Mt Airy have a special property tax for education in their city school districts. This is a “property tax” not an income tax or sales tax. So the only people paying this tax are those who own property in these school districts! So many citizens outside those districts own property inside and pay for better schools. The county commissioners must approve these special taxes every year by a simple majority vote.
I also pay a county, city, and school tax on my car which you have to pay to the state to get your license plate for my car, plates included, and then pay county, city, and school tax on my home.ELKIN and Mt Airy have a special property tax for education in their city school districts.
