Smithereens in the "Tin Gym" was a good show too.

At the time I was a hard rock loving music man and wasn't in to country much at all. Had a Clint Black, Keith Whitley, and the Garth cd but that was it. Well, I waited in line all damn day to get tickets to this one. My tickets were BEHIND the stage and I thought I'd just wasted my money. Well, that was probably the best concert I have ever been to. His first wife was pregnant with their first kid, there were flowers, baby gifts, signs, and Lord knows what else given to him that night and stacked it all on the stage. He knew better than anyone how to win folks over with his personality. Best part of the night was when the kid ran on stage midsong and tugged on his blue jeans while he was singing and took off back to his parents and when the song was over Garth went over and gave the kid the guitar he was playing for the song. Oh, and my seats behind the stage were better than the ones on the opposite end of the Hump cause he ran around back there all night singing to everyone in the Hump. Been a Garth fan since although he's gotten a little more hammy as I've gotten older

Mac McAnally, John Prine, Robert Palmer, Billy Joel (very good), Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen (awesome).....memory fades.

Most regrettable missed shows: Heart, Buffet, Frampton, America.

All-time regret, MSU or anywhere, that I missed: Eagles, circa 1976-1977.

It's too bad they don't still have shows like that at the Hump. Widespread Panic played there in the 90's and Starkville PD had a field day with all of the arrests. Needless to say, WP has not and will not come back. probably scared off many more bands too.

No doubt. There was a distinct plumb of smoke over the amphitheater that night

There was pot everywhere. I couldn't believe it was being allowed as much as it was. Great show too. I was never a pot smoker but I think I know what it felt like to get high after that night.

Showing my age, but...

in the Hump - Alabama, John Michael Montgomery

Older than that:
in the Tin Gym - Lynard Skynard (original group before most of them were killed in airplane crash)

Even older than that:
in the Cow Barn (the old Animal Husbandry Building) - Z Z Top, Ferante and Teischer

The big concert era is long gone, and you can thank MTV, and the hip hop culture for the demise of music. It will never be like it was in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. I doubt much of what's been recorded in the last 15 years will be remembered in another 5 or 10.

Didn't Huey Lewis open for the Police Synchronicity Tour and The Fabulous Thunderbirds opened for 38 Special?

I went to most every concert from about 76-87 give or take a few years.

The only concert they had at the Hump when I was in school there was Blues Traveler and some rap band opening. Maybe Young Jeezy? Needless to say there was a max exodus in between the two sets

I saw him in 1982 at the Hump

I heard he had a great show at the Cow Barn in the 1970's. However, his 1982 concert was lacking.

Doesn't feel like it was really that long ago ...

but only thing that was happening at where the Hump is now ... when I was at State ... was the submarine races.

I was a grad assistant at the hump in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2007 so all of them during that time frame. My favorite was watching David Ellis play at the hump. Didn't even know the guy could sing.

This is one depressing thread. Why no more shows? Between the Hump and amphitheater we are missing out.

Wondered the same myself

This is one depressing thread. Why no more shows? Between the Hump and amphitheater we are missing out.

My first concert @ the Hump was Billy Joel in 79, completely forgot that one and the Hump was always the go-to place for a good show in familiar environs. Alas, I guess it was too much to expect out of the staff+liabilities+overwhelming costs of bands

Not necessarily. The Bon Jovi, "Slippery When Wet" tour in the late 80's is the

biggest crowd I've ever seen at the Hump and this was at the heighth of the hair metal period. I think I still have the concert T-Shirt somewhere.

I know I've seen .38 Special and Huey Lewis and the News both at the Hump and

I didn't see The Police or The Fabulous Thunderbirds so I'm almost positive it was .38 Special and Huey Lewis together. That was prolly '83 or so.
