Anybody know the details? i know we went to court & got a legal decision that contradicted the NCAA, but it didn't matter. We still forfeited 19 wins over 3 seasons.<div>

wasn't there a Guillard family member funeral involved in this? or is that folklore?

For some reason I'm remembering that the suit was for Guillard to go to a funeral for a family member.

brothers. I am pretty sure any college student not just MSU got the same discount at Howard Miskelly's store in Okalona. They probably had more on us but couldn't prove it so they just used this bogus charge. The whole thing was a sham when you compare it with what is going on today.

to Larry`s father and he in turn could give it to Larry as long as Larry (wink wink) didn`t know where his father got it. Correct ?

wish I could remember the judge's name. He declared Larry eligible in honor of America's bicentennial. It was pretty funny at the time. I guess the NCAA had the last laugh.

The official reason was that Guillard received an extra $3.33 discount over and above the discount other students could receive. Back then the NCAA required actual documentation to put someone on probation (instead of hearsay like in the '90s with Sherrill). This is all they could document.

But the real story is that we guilty of a lot more and it went all the way to the head coach. That's why Tyler never got another D-1 job.

They hit us with a hard probation because of what they knew was going on and justified it with the discount.

The forfeits were another matter. We got an injunction to allow Guillard to play while we appealed. We had to forfeit the games in which he played.

they couldn't even document that with any objectivity. The store owner went on record in the papers that Gilliard got nothing that any other student wouldn't have. He even said the NCAA investigators who interviewed him didn't want to hear that.

If I remember correctly, Larry Gillard's grandmother passed away and he needed a suit for the ceremony. He did not have one and went to Okolona to get it. When Larry came to State, he rode in a borrowed car with his family and all he had was in one small suitcase. He was a great guy who came from very challenging circumstances.

I happened to see Larry Gillard this past fall at a M Club sponsored get together before a game. He is now a minister and I think he is in Louisiana. By the way, he seemed very happy and was dressed in a suit.

Congress was investigating the NCAA for bribing and pressuring students and others to testify against schools/players. The store owner testified to Congress that he gave Larry Gillard the same discount he gave to all students, but the NCAA wouldn't let him tell his side of the story.

Tyler continued to play Guilard, after he had been brought into question (unlike Newton).
And that, for the most part is why we have the * by some of our games.

Keep in mind that we defied and actually filed suit againts the NCAA.

The deal at Miskelly's was just the only smoking gun.

It has been so nice having him down to one or two posts a quarter the last year or so. Have you noticed how much better our football team has been since he quit posting as much?

we were paying players and the NCAA did not publish their findings back then. Bob Tyler dreamed up the Guillard and discount clothing thing to be the only violation. There were many violationsbut Tyler played the Guillard discount as the only violation and it has been folklore since. As has been pointed out, the court injunction which was later overruled, was the reason for the forfeits. We were fortunate for it not to have been worse and lucky to rid ourselves of Tyler.
