we just have to remember that baseball crowds WILL come back when the product gets to be better WITH CONSISTENCY. Baseball is NOT football. Football is an EVENT with tailgating and pageantry and there are ONLY 6 to 7 games per year all on the weekend (well usually). People come to baseball games to SEE the baseball team. There is really no other reason to come for the most part. It did use to be more of an EVENT with the Saturday DH grilling out in the lounge all day but killing off the DH and the team going downhill has hurt that a LOT. We actually still have decent crowds in the outfield on weekends its just the people traveling to sit in the grandstand and actually watch the game have gone way down. Let's just face it, when the team is not performing at a high level in the conference and you have to drive 2 hours to see ONE game of a 56 game schedule there is not much motivation to do so unless you have absolutely nothing else to do. This is where having a school in a more rural area where fans are mostly coming from farther off really hurts. We have lost the tradition and the DHs that drew a large segment of our crowd back in the day and until MSU baseball becomes "special" again it will be hard to get them back. But I agree with bringing the fences in and having a few long balls will add to the excitement of the game and I agree that having some other family friendly events around the baseball game will help as well but bottom line we NEED to be in a race for the SEC or SEC West to generate more interest. Other than last season's late run in the SEC we haven't had that IN YEARS.

Tennessee has a horrible program (at least the past couple of years) and their coach is having success in year one. Quality coaches win, period. Cohen has a pass for the first couple of years but it's just starting to get ridiculous. If baseball and the NCAA weren't political and Templeton didn't have his hands in post season scheduling I don't see us going back to that same regional, a very winnable regional.

geneally has no idea what he's taking about, but on the point about the SEC being tougher in baseball compared to football, I agree. Top to bottom, the league is pretty even. Hell, look at the standings. Whereas in football, you have about 4 teams, and then you havethe rest.

I really don't think most fans come to a baseball game just to watch baseball. I'm probably one of the few that do and actually enjoy what is going on on the field in terms of strategy. Thing is, people like me will show up no matter what. But there aren't very many people that are interested in baseball to the degree that I am.

We have to make it an event. That's why the LFL is full- it's an event for those people. They are there to socialize and bar-b-que and whatever else as much as they are there for the game.

Think about most women that claim that they like baseball a lot. I've dated some of them, and normally after talking to them or going to a game with them, I normally get- "Yeah- I love being outside and getting a tan and eating the food..." and there is nothing wrong with that at all.

There is a reason why minor league teams do the promotions and the things that they do. And MLB team for that matter too.

And yes, winning helps, but again, where was everybody early in the season before the injuries and struggles hit?

I hate not being in the outfield. I want to be able walk around, cook, and drink just as much as watch the game.

that WAS happening back even in the Polk glory days to draw fans other than the fact we had a more consistent winning team. I know people have more things to do with their time now but if we had a more consistently good product I still believe people would come on SEC weekends anyway. And I don't think baseball is on most people's minds in late February through mid-March so our early season crowds this year, to me, doesn't tell me a lot. Heck, I can remember a lot of bare bone crowds in the very early part of the year back when Clark and Palmeiro were playing. Its a 3 hour drive for me to Starkville and I used to would come to a couple of SEC series a year but I have a lot of family things going on, and no better than we currently are, its a LOT easier and cheaper for me to stay home and watch it on Hail State TV than take up the time and spend the gas, food and ticket money to go all the way to Starkville to watch the games in person. Maybe that makes me less of a fan but that's just the way it is. Now if we were actually in a conference race or had that kind of quality team I would probably still take the time to come over when I can but its not worth it right now. Now if I lived in the Golden Triangle area I be there for most home SEC weekends anyway even now.

Todd, I agree 100% with that. And as a student whose least favorite sport is baseball I can tell you I only go for the atmosphere. It's hard to top. The reason I don't go to games though is I can grill and drink beer at my house and not have to witness a series loss to SELU.

In the opening series against WSU we were able to commandeer one of the trailers because some of our friends parents just simply don't go to games anymore. If we put a product on the field people are proud of, attendance figures will skyrocket because casual fans follow other fans. Promotions and events won't get me there, but my friends who love baseball and want to go and enjoy a game that we have a chance in hell of winning will though.

Nothing has changed much- and when that happens the atmosphere becomes stale and boring. We have to constantly remain fresh.

I certainly agree that a winning team helps, but until we start promoting and doing things better, it's going to hurt attendance. And the more we can help attendance, the more it will help with recruiting players that can help us win championships.

And no, I'm not saying that facilties and atmosphere will get us to land the top 10 players as rated by PG, but if we want those non-Mississippi top rated guys to come to Starkville, we need to step it up because the facilities and the atmospehere matters the most to those players than any of the others.

at all in college athletics. Thanks for straightening that out for me genius. You stated that SEC baseball is superior to SEC football(that makes our facilities in both sports relevant). I believe that we are more likely to win the SEC or a NC in baseball than we are in football. Disagree? I would love to hear you spin on the subject.

All I was saying was that SEC baseball is tougher top to bottom this year. Quit trying so hard to disagree and spin it to make yourself right. You are right. It's easier for us to win in baseball, but that's not what I was saying. Someone else might have, but I wasn't.

Stansbury was running our program into the ground the last two years. I couldn't take it. People are acting like Cohen is doing the same thing. I am perfectly aware that he hasn't quite lived up to our hopes and aspirations. All I am saying is let's take a step back, realize how completely different the two situations are, and quit treating the baseball team the same way and be positive occassionally. If you are gonna criticize something, fine, but everybody is acting like our season is over and we're headed to the house.I fully expect our hitting to get hott at some point. What are all the whiners gonna talk about then?

eta: I didn't even post on here that much. But towards the end of the season, I couldn't hold it back.

They have as much right to post and ***** about a coach who is in his 4th season and only looks a little better then he did his first. I hope Cohen turns it around. I hope we get to a regional. I hope Cohen turns out to be the best coach we ever had and I will not come here and start a new topic about the same **** every 20 minutes after every game. Hell after every game we had two to three pages of topics about the same **** during basketball. That's what really got old. I will say this, I am willing to give him five years butafter the 5th year he's not getting it done he needs to go. He really needs to go after four if he doesn't make the SEC tournament but I am willing to look past it. It doesn't take four or five years to build a baseball or basketball team. It does in football and we only gave Croom five years and I think five is long enough for baseball, maybe too long. I wanted Polk gone and you can go back and research I said that here.Right nowPolk was a better coach then Cohen.Polk just got lazy in recruiting. That's the fact and I can't help but think that things would not have been any worse the past 4 years if we had kept Polk around. Like I said I hope Cohen turns out to be the best ever. I have not gone back and looked but I don't think Polk lite up the SEC his first three years and I hope Cohen is figuring out the lay of the land.

This is the second year in a row we're looking at being a bubble team. Last year we were bubble in and made a decent run (with some outside help), this year we'll probably be bubble out. Our basketball program that Stans ran into the ground was bubble out, and out baseball team this year probably will be too. It's amazing the hypocrisy you two have with Stans and Cohen.

and their program is in better shape than what Cohen took over

Tenn has had more top 10 round draft picks the last 5 years than Auburn, Bama, Florida, Georgia, and State

Also, they didnt lose 7 of their 8 starting position players last season. Aaaaaand- they lost to us last night

What hypocracy? Just LAST SEASON Cohen made the Sweet 16- something Stansbury never did- not once in 14 years

When Stansbury lost all his starters and started a young team in 2006- I didn't raise hell about us sucking. I told every one of you we were going to suck- it was a rebuilding year. But the wool was so strong here- all I heard was "Stansbury just reloads" and "you just watch, Stans has his version of the Fab 5"...and then everybody got mad at me when we actually did suck- and was born the quote "you'd rather be right than us win"

We're rebuilding this season. Believe me, if we don't have a good season next year- I'll be all over his ***. But the difference is I know Cohen can coach- and I knew Stansbury couldn't

For some reason, you just can't get this through people's heads on here. But I am 100% with you on that. There's no doubt about it. None.

Well it's damn well time he start proving it at MSU. You know as well asI do that thesuper-regionallast yearwas a fluke gift. How many #3 seeds since the current formatstarted havehad as easy a road to a super as we did lastyear? Seriously,I'd like to see a couple of examples. He barely got into the tournament to begin with and gotthedraw of a lifetime. I hope Cohen can take MSU baseball where it needs to be, but so far I haven't seen it.

that's off the top of my head.

You can call it a fluke, but that fluke was set up by Cohen's decision to pitch Pollo against USM, which took out their ace, and then we pitch Evan against Austin Peay and dominated them, and then beat GT with Routt, whom we saved.

If it had been Polk, we would have used Routt against USM, probably lost, and then would have gotten knocked out by GT in game two.

Cohen outcoached that whole regional. IMO his experimentation which we call "ridiculous" in the regular season will trend to help us bigtime in the playoffs in the future. He constantly puts guys in uncomfortable situations and gauges the reaponse. This lends itself to the best possible understanding of his team at the end of a season....

Stansbury wins 3 NCAA games in 6 trips- 2 of them in the 8-9 game and the other when we are a heavy favorite...and he still never made a Sweet 16

Cohen goes wins a regional beating nothing but higher seeded teams- yet somehow thats just luck. Had Stansbury done something like that- it would be greatest thing ever. Remember Polk's run to the CWS in 2007? Was Polk lucky that Clemson upset the national seed for us so that we could host the Super?

and Polk was also lucky that LT had connections on the committee to get us the SR to Starkville.

Bout the only thing the POS was good for.

I won't complain though. Everything about that was great including banana boy.
