Is there a chance that we could end up looking like AU last year under Tony Franklin or is Mullen's spread different than his? I am definitely expecting growing pains I just hope they are not on the same scale as Auburn's last year... Theres no chance of us looking like AU last year right??

One of AU's biggest problems is the fact that Tuberville didn't want to go to the spread, and he didn't let Franklin have input on assistants. Franklin was forced to use Tubby's existing offensive assistants. Basically, they never gave him a chance from the start.

That said, yes, there is a chance your spread struggles next year. It'll be a new system to everyone on the team, and you'll probably be throwing some young guys to the fire, so it could crash and burn a little bit before getting going late in the year or in the second year. That said, even if it crashes and burns, it can't be much worse than the Croom Coast that led you to 5 straight years outside the Top 100 in offense.

in regard to tony franklin's spread yall should read this. it's from a blog called smart football. the guy who runs it really knows his stuff. it's a very technically sound site filled with tons of info on blocking schemes, offensive tactics, route running, etc... i usually double check ideas i have about some aspect of football through this website before i go running my mouth.

anyway, in regard to msu, i have no idea if we will be able to run the spread well. but if you want a clearer idea of what happened at auburn this is a great resource.

That he has stated that he is not going to arbitrarily run a offense to run a specific offense. He has stated that the spread is more of a concept than a specific set of plays & that he will design & adjust our offense based on what our players strong points & capabilities are based on the concepts of the spread.

Imagine that, we are going to adjust our offense to utilize the talents of the players we have.

With Mullen stating these things from the get go, he is already more successful than the previous

and have a good coach, it works. No reason it wouldn't work at MSU. There may be a tough transition year though. It seems to happen at most places.

I have no idea if it will work. However, I do expect it to be better than Croom's offense.

I think it has a good chance to work for two reasons:

1) I think it is better suited to the talent that we recruit to MSU. Over time, I think the athletes to fit the spread are more readily available in our recruiting base than athletes that fit the West Coast offense. I expect us to get better as we go forward.

2) I think this group of offensive coaches is the best coaching brain trust that we've had at MSU in a long time. I'm confident they are talented enough to put together something that will move the ball and score points.

Here is why the Spread will do fine at State:

1. We ran a Jr High offense the last 5 years and averaged about 280 yards a game- it cant be any worse that what we have done.
2. We will be less predictable
3. We wont do as much sideways running as Auburn did- if you've watched Fla- they were running downhill more
4. We have an intelligent coach that has stated over and over he will adjust the offense to our personnel
5. Less people in the box means our OL has a better chance to be successful

We are not going to come out in year 1 and score 40 a game and average 400 yards of offense. But what we will do, is have fewer 3 and outs, change field position, give our defense a better chance to keep us in games until our playmakers we signed this year mature. I expect to average 25-27 points a game and about 330-340 yards of offense per game.

we had no real threat at WR last season and teams knew it as they stacked the box.

1. Mullen knows what he is doing and Croom and McCrovey were complete dumbasses. As has been said, Mullen is going to use everyone that is eligible to carry the ball instead of "establishing the run no matter what". And establishing the run no matter what is not even a WCO offense principle, which shows how how little the two assclowns before Mullen knew.

2. Tyson Lee knows how to run the spread and is a senior. If he has one strength, it is his smarts. That's going to help us out a lot.

3. Yes, our o-line will be our weakness, but at least we'll be doing some things to help them out.

4. We have some slot receivers like Delmon Robinson and The Secret Weapon already on the roster, plus Bumphis coming in.

5. We have a reliabe receiver in Brandon McRae, who it appears will be back, plus Leon Berry. I have no clue if Berry will pan out or not, but I like his name. Another guy to look out for is going to be O'Neal Wilder. I think this coaching staff will really help him out a lot.

6. We have Dixon, who is a good inside runner, but we also have Arnil Stallworth, who I think could really benefit from this new system. And if Elliott can't come back, we have Perkins who I think can come in right away and help us out.

7. We have some guys like Marcus Green, who I think will be an H-back, and Nelson Hurst that we can put out there and try to get some mismatches and make some plays for us.

and Perkins will be pushing the starters. They both look very good, but Perkins looks like he will be a game breaker.

compared to the last couple of years, our version of the spread can't look too bad. Pretty much only one way to go.

My only concern is toughness - not desire - but just sheer toughness. There is a big difference between 1A high school ball and the SEC in terms of the repeated pounding you take from big, strong, fast football players.

but take it from a guy who played football, it is VERY hard to hit a guy like Perkins hard. He is short, fast, and very elusive. You will see that he will be hit directly and hard very little. But you are right, if he does we need him to be tough

....spread works and we win games, then we can all smile. If it fails, then we remain where we started......at the bottom of the SEC. Next coach.............

If we average 25 - 27 points we will be bowling.

the part about bowling, the offense, I have no idea what we will average, but whatever it is, I think it will be good enough to improve by two games.

Heck, like I've said a couple of times before, if we had a decent kicker last year, we would have gone bowling- and that's WITH the loss to La Tech, and that's WITH our offense.

and defending the Spread after arguing against it the last couple of years</p>

I was just saying that saying the WCO won't work in college wasn't true.

I think you mistook (is this a word?) what I was saying and thought I was defending Croom.
