Wonder if the sports media will have similar headlines for our next Head Coach if he turns out to be a big name? From the December 24, 1990 Sports Illustrated:

To me, it turns out Sherrill's only sins were bitchslapping Longhorn and Rebel ***, and their pansy-assed fans couldn't take their beatings like men.

Edited to let you know that, according to the article, his base salary was $75,000.

Off topic, but why is Starkville always gettin hated on? I enjoyed the article immensely, but the description of Starkville being on "flat drab farmland" is totally inaccurate! Main Street itself sits on top of a steep ridge. If the author would have driven from highway 389 he would have climbed an extremely steep hill to enter Starkville. The entire country side surrounding Starkville consists of rolling hills and valleys. I hate when Starkville gets a bad rap for something that isn't even close to being true. Sorry for the rant.

people are lazy and don't want to find out for themselves. I'm regular told by first time visitors from other schools how "shocked" they are at the campus and the tailgating and the Cotton District and so forth.

...like Oklahoma State or Oregon, they are utterly astounded by how well we do our tailgates...and we're not even considered the top tier of SEC tailgate experiences (LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, Etc.). One of the reasons is that they read those "They call it STARKville for a reason" articles, and are convinced that the campus is in the middle of a pasture and they have to take care to not step into cowshit. When they see we have BRICK buildings and the fans wear shoes, it blows them away...along with the Widescreen TV's, the 100 ft. long lines of food at some tents, and the hundreds of different way you can cook up pork loin, ribs, and hamburger.

this year (for ESPN), but I remember him saying how awesome the town and the environment was. He admitted he didn't think it would be that nice.

because he's the only football coach that has ever really made the MSU fan base truly believe that we could be successful and then DID it! Yes, the last 3 years were abysmal but it was worth it for the first 10. And I still don't blame Jackie for eventually being the branded target of the other SEC schools and the NCAA resulting in a 3 year investigation with only chicken-feed violations found. ANYTIME we have real lasting success that is threatening to Ole Miss or the SEC "power" schools they are going to try and put us back in our place. Jackie, like I believe Fulmer and Tubbs are starting to do, had just about run out of juice in his last couple of years here but he gave us quite a ride for a good number of years!
