What was wrong with that?

I didn't see anything malicious there. He just ran in standing up. Does the runner have to stand there and let the guy come tag him? I smell BS there.

You need to call the catcher out for taunting him. I didn't see any forearms being thrown, but i did see the catcher throw down his mask and talk some trash.

And that's ********. In baseball, a player is not required to run around someone in the basepaths. The UF catcher was WAY up the line, he wasn't just slightly up the line blocking the plate. Complete horseshit call to throw the USM batter out. Hell, the UF catcher was so far up the line it wouldn't have been unreasonable to call the runner safe.

But after looking at the replays I have to say the catcher should have been tossed for the taunting. That was too far. The runner didn't throw an elbow. He lifted his arm up to shield his body then his elbow was elevated by the catcher's hard tag.

and you are required to run around him. Sliding wasn't an option...he would have been a couple of yards short.

I didn't think that the ball was deep enough to send the runner, but still that call was ridiculous.

the runner has to avoid the catcher. As long as the catcher stands in the basepath, there's no way the runner can score.

But to me, it did look like the guy for USM jabbed at his head with his elbow, which I thought was a little dirty. I think the catcher reacted the way he did as well as the pitcher because of the elbow job. I don't know if it was intentional or not. To me, it looked intentional.

Still, both guys should have been ejected.

As far as the runner, I guess he should have slid. He still would have been out by a mile no matter what he did. At least by sliding you make the catcher go down and you don't have something happen on accident or otherwise like that by going in standing up.

I know what the rule says, but if common sense prevailed the world of college baseball, the runner would have been called out and both benches would have been warned. The only reason the umpire kicked the USM guy out was because of how the rule is written.

but its stupid in college. It almost pisses me off as much as roughing the passer in the NFL has become.

but I don't put my arm in their face. I think that was the main issue here.

The guy for USM still might be in the game if he didn't go for the catcher's head.

I agree, that was stupid to send the runner. That ball was almost shallow enough for the second baseman to catch. They should have taken their chances with two outs and the bases still loaded.

does that carry over to game 3, if necessary? I know some ejections carry over to the next game or is that just for coaches?</p>

I think his arm was a few inches away from his chest, shielding himself. Looked to me like the catcher's tag pushed his arm up.

Corky didn't really stand up for him to much after the umpire explained it to him.

If there was any doubt, Corky would be out of the game to. The coach is supposed to stand up for his players if one of them get kicked out unjustly. And none of the other players for USM stood up for their guy either.

And regrdless of where he hit him, you can't jab your elbow at somebody face, chest or whatever.

Like I said, he would probably still be in the game if he had just kept his arm down where he had it to start with.

First, the USM guy DID throw a elbow and it caught the catcher up under the chin. You can see his mask pop up and his head move back when he gets hit. Second, the ball was there WAY before the USM guy. This was not a bang-bang play, there was zero chance the USM player was going to get to the plate unless he took out the catcher. Since that is illegal there was no need to even make an agressive move. And no matter how you feel about the rule it IS the rule.

As far as the Florida player, yeah he talked but he just got jacked under the chin. I would talk to. But he didn't stick around trying to start a fight or anything. I think the umpire got it right. The USM guy broke the rule which calls for being tossed. The Florida guy taunted but only because he just got jacked, so that too was really the USM players fault. The ejection was the right thing to do given the rules of College Baseball.
