there is really no difference between the top students at any school. It's the average student that is different. If she is a very good student in the classroom, she is going to succeed wherever she goes. Vanderbilt may make it a little easier, though. Maybe.

What's the big deal then... We're used to disappointment.

The only problem I would ever have with my child going to an out of state college is expense. If she has a scholarship, then it's all on her. If her dad has a problem with that, then that is really sad.

The top 1% may be different (the best schools will attract the absolute best), and the bottom 90% will certainly be different, but if you look at the top 10%, you'll get about the same whether it's Harvard, Vandy, State or even USM. Of course, you have to account for differences amongst programs (i.e. the top 10% at State will probably be concentrated more in Engineering, Ag, etc., but you'll still have great students in other departments).

I went to State and Vandy, and I'd tell her she can get an equally good education at either. My wife, likewise a State grad who went to grad school at Vandy, would tell you the same. Planned major could matter in some cases, but it doesn't seem like it does in hers. The pertinent question is where, big picture, she feels most comfortable.

And most of those reasons involve the assumption that I also have a free ride to Yale, Harvard, Cornell, etc.

I think she would regret not taking advantage of that if she doesn't. Dad needs to be understanding in this situation. If she ends up not liking it, transferring is always an option.

Let's not discount GA Tech too much either. That's a tough free ride to pass up as well.

the connections that she'd get at Vandy might take her a little bit further.
The connections you make at a place where people are on that high of a level will take you a lot of places. My sister went to an Ivy League School and the people she knows and has connections to will blow your mind.
