True. Maybe he couldn't figure out how to get back in, like me. I haven't been on here in the last two years until tonight. I got on Catspause the week of "THE DOOR" when Calipari was leaving Memphis...that was the best time online short of 2012.
That’s what happened to me. In the final Cal years watching our decline affected me and I lost something I never thought was possible…the deep excitement I got from watching games and posting like mad on here during the off season. I came back when Pope got hired and almost never figured out how to get my account back on. I still haven’t figured out how to remove the “rivals” off my handle.

Oh and I’m no boomer but I thought Catphight’s photoshops were hilarious!

I had a similar timeline with my start being when it was Catspause back in 2009-2010 (when they first hired Cal). I slowly learned disdain for Cal over the years after a plethora of what I deemed unforgiveable mistakes/changes/losses for the program. (its been discussed to death on here). I became quite critical of him on here before it became acceptable (after the St. Peter and Oakland losses) and was struck with what was in-effect a perma-ban. I was on and off for years always being quickly banned if I appeared under a similar handle.

I remember several names mentioned in this thread; BKO, SmoothAsButter (how ya been, Smooth?!), Jason Spear, and who could forget Poe? This is going way back. Cotton-Issel, DaveKersey, etc etc.

It's really good to be back.
For sure. I definitely remember you as one of the ones with good and fair insight. I don't recall it being unwarranted criticism, so it would be interesting to see why you were banned. Everyone likes to critique! The last time I didn't was the 2012 games. I went to New Orleans and watched us whip UL and then we topped Kansas and I had nothing to say to my brother sitting next to me but "EXCELLENT!" That day will come again.

Yea I remember. One thing to think about is when the coach first posters don’t like you due to not liking the UK coach even if he’s hurting the program, its no no on facebook and here. The coach first posters (and they are) will constantly report you and I think it gets to the point where there’s a mod or 2 that just get tired of it and ban. They are a collective little tattling group.

Also and I’ve said this before, I personally know a guy who’s basically family with a former grad assist at UofMem. He said it time and time again that Calipari had them scour the internet including MT.org especially to find out what the base was doing. They applied pressure to have certain things removed. I’m sure Calipari wasn’t above this here either. I’m sure there was pressure to control the flow here at times. A son of a super influential booster at UofMem who was what you’d call an unofficial insider for Brooks Hansen claimed this as well. So I’ve always thought this was happening here.

The only difference in you and I in those years was I saw the need for Calipari based on our position but we both seemed to see through him early on and many didn’t like it because they didn’t understand it. I can name 3 posters here that I would read and think “they know Calipari, the real Calipari”. You were definitely one of them.

I do remember trying to explain to my Dad at the time that everything Cal was doing in the early years "greatest night in UK bball history" etc, was geared towards recruiting. I remember defending one-and-done because it was always about the next batch of superstars. I remember believing in the idea that "they'll drag us across the finish line to a title".

At some point, and as you alluded, it became obvious that Cal was on this quest, I don't know, maybe to get into heaven, where it truly was "players first" over the team. He actually admitted this and no one took him at face value when after the title he said something to the affect of "i told Ellen we have ours, its about them now". He was telling the truth. Everything became about the players and "getting them out of generational poverty". A noble venture? Sure. But not in the job-description of UK's men's head basketball coach. Citing this fact on here at the time was evidently ban-worthy, though it eventually became the consensus.

One thing I'll say about Cal is that he never lied to us about his intentions with the program and his position. He told us exactly what he was doing and so many on here, and in the masses of UK fandom, chose to not believe him. "I cant hide you here" translation- my promise is that you'll start and you'll play alot, so if you don't play well you'll be exposed, but you will play thats my promise to get you here. "Position-less basketball" translation this is what fans will accept in order to play certain profiles of players in non-traditional positions so that I can continue to get the top recruits and continue my impact on ending generational poverty.

Do you remember when so many posters would say in reference to Cal and playing-time or starting positions "hE dOeSn'T pRomISe ThEM aNyThInG"!!! That was the main indicator for me during those days that they just didn't understand. Doesn't promise them anything, huh? So Quade Green just earned his starting spot over Shai Gilgeous Alexander? DJ Wagner just that much better than Reed and Rob? At some point he didn't even scout these recruits, just took the highest ranked kid and it showed. Anyone in their right mind could tell VERY early that Quade was no comparison to SGA.

Anyway, I could go on and on. It was good while it lasted with Cal, but it didn't last. Pope might not work out, but Cal was done here. I do think the board has softened on "hot takes" these days. And maybe you're right about Cal having someone scour the message boards for negativity and having some kind of back-channel action being taken. Certainly doesn't seem the case for Pope as he has been criticized on here as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, @UKGrad24 , but it seems you and I also had in common being a couple of old baseball guys. Maybe I'm thinking of someone else. I digress. Good to be back and good to be conversing with you and with all again.

Agree 100%. Calipari would always tell you what he was really doing, most of the time, he would just say it in a way that you had to actually listen to what he was really saying. He always did this, well before he got to UK.

The fans that bought his messaging, lol. The idea that Calipari didn’t promise anything to recruits is one of the funnier things. It’s like SS, clearly Calipari knew the deal early and took him anyway to add a notch to the NBA players belt. It’s the only way he could get the top 5 at that point, he lost them all to Duke. So he took him knowing full well what his camp was doing. Maybe he thought he could change their mind at some point, and wanted to add pressure to them to get him to play, but really he knew early. “Show up to watch him in the layup line”. Calipari taking mad shots at us with that one. Still people took the slap and turned for another lol.

We are definitely baseball guys, I think you’re guessing correctly.
