What's everybody's thoughts on Kenny Payne?

I know he has been talked about some, but what do we really know? He seems to be a really good recruiter. He was a part of some good classes at Oregon where they had a couple players drafted once he arrived, and then he helped reel in Kentucky's class last year which was incredible. How much of that was Calipari though? So far, I haven't really read anything about what he brings to the table as a coach. Other than that he helped develop that Harrelson guy last year. Is he another Stansbury? Or worse, an Orgeron? What say ye?

I forget what year it was, but when he walked by the whole student section stood up and started cheering. It impressed him so much, he signed with Louisville.

I remember one of the guys on the team then being quoted as "when we get the recruit here..." speaking of Payne. Boyd thought we had him and when he signed with Louiville to Boyd it was a big blow. Don't think it was long thereafter that Boyd left and Williams took the reigns.

AK got in a fight during his visit as a player, didn't he?

Maybe we should have a coaching candidate pool consisting of players who turned us down or had a bad recruiting visit.

I remember that night too. Crushed me when he didn't come to State. Never have forgiven him for that.

I know Russell and he would agree. They both played at NE Jones. Kenny was an incredible athlete. I'm glad to see that he has done well for himself. To even be brought up as a possibility here says a lot to me.

As others have stated already, the bastardleft us at the alter yrs ago(andbtw took alot of South MS Bulldawg dollars with him to Louisville). I too was at the game when he visited...17 him.His rep is as a recruiter...we aint gonna do better than we just had on the recruiting front. If we do start landing top 10-15 classes, watch us go on probation faster than you can say Kermit Davis, Jr(see Texas A&M)
Grasshopper better come up with a Wow hire. A retread or unproven guy is something our program doesn't deserve.

I'm 27 now, but several years ago my dad and I were having a conversation about buying players. He told me a story about a few people in his local Bulldog Club chapter (North AL) asking him to chip in to help get the best player in MS. They told him they had to at least match what Louisville was offering. My father didn't have the money nor the desire to join the fund, so he declined the offer. Apparently we didn't match Louisville or he took both school's money and left the state. Either way, there are probably a lot of people still around the program that wouldn't get on board with him as our coach.<div>
</div><div>Now, I am not that naive to believe that this sort of stuff doesn't still go on, but 25 years from now I wouldn't want Cam Newton coming back to be our football coach.</div>

I would rather have Antigua from UK than Kenny Payne. Antigua can flat out recruit and has great connections in NY and FL.

sports editor actively recruited for Louisville. Believe his name was Bordon. Helped them land Lancaster Gordon, Charles Jones and Kenny Payne. Denny Crum didn't know where Mississippi was before that guy took over the CL.
