A thorn to Mississippi State Athletics Director Scott Stricklin, who should have known better. Earlier this week, the MSU basketball team lost to Missouri in a most embarrassing fashion. The Bulldogs scored just 10 points in the first half and lost 78-36, the largest margin of defeat ever at MSU's Humphrey Coliseum. This loss emphasizes a horrible decision made last spring when Stricklin engineered the forced retirement of Rick Stansbury, the winningest coach in MSU history. New coach Rick Ray cannot be faulted; he inherited a team decimated by player departures, injuries and suspensions. Going into Saturday, MSU has won just seven of 23 games and may not win another.

Interestingly, Stricklin is the son-in-law of Bailey Howell, widely regarded as the greatest MSU basketball player of all-time. Howell could have told his son-in-law all about the perils of dumping a successful coach. Bailey's own coach at MSU, Babe McCarthy, was similarly rewarded for his success by being shown the door. It took MSU years to return to prominence after McCarthy's misguided dismissal. Clearly, it will take years for MSU to recover from Stansbury's departure, too. Now we are seeing the consequences of that "what have you done for me lately" decision. The once-proud MSU program is the laughingstock of college basketball.

If Stans was such a great coach, he would be coaching somewhere right now.

The Recruiter was removed because of all the turmoil around the program- not so much him only making the NCAA Tourney 2 times in the last 7 years

Dumpster Fire
The Most Dysfunctional Program in America

We were a laughingstock already- that's what the diehards cant seem to grasp

What in the world was that: An article? An opinion piece? A reader submission? It's under the Opinions tab, but its not real clear whose opinion it is.

Rarely do you see coaches take another job a season after getting canned. Wait till next year to make that assessment.

Yeah, I would have loved to see Stansbury keep his job. I like the guy, and I think he did a great for the school and program. But, when we went from #15 in the country to missing the tournament in one month, mainly because of the very reasons most critics harped on (lack of discipline, etc.), then it's obviously time for a change. If Stans could have held it together, then it would be different.

We'll see how Ray turns out, but even if he's a complete failure the change we made was still justified.

Actually, I'm beginning to think we should have kept Stansbury one more year. We had already kept him at least 1 year too long and the damage was done. But if we'd let him coach this season, no one would have bitched about it when we fired him and we wouldn't have split the fanbase.

It's apparently a committee of editorial writers for the paper. You never know which one it is though. So basically, they are too scared to put their name behind it.

While everybody except Dawggeezer and SouthMsDawg would have been ready to get rid of him after this season- we still would have had the discipline issues and work ethic problems to deal with next year- potentially wasting yet another season.

True, but we would have nearly as split of a fanbase as we do now. And I suspect we wouldn't have MSU "fans" trying to sabotage the program either. Might have been worth one more year.

Thorn was uncalled for

As an avid MSU fan and basketball season ticket holder for the past 30 years I take issue with the thorn you awarded to MSU athletic director Scott Sticklin in Sunday's paper.

First of all, your comments are ill-timed at best. To second guess the coaching change at this time near the end of a difficult season is too easy and nothing short of piling on. And in reality, this coaching change and decision by Mr. Sticklin, as with any coaching in any sport at any school, will be better judged after about three years.

But to say this program is the "laughingstock of college basketball" and that they have lost in "embarrassing fashion" is just plain wrong. This team is short on experience and short on sheer numbers due to injuries and Coach Ray's building a program of discipline, but this team is not an embarrassment.

We were the laughingstock of college basketball when our players got in a fight in the stands in Hawaii in December of 2010. I was embarrassed at the start of each game the past couple of years when our team did not line up and stand at attention for the national anthem. I was also embarrassed in past years to see very talented players who did not put forth effort, who played as individuals rather than as a team and who did not meet expectations or potential.

As a fan and season ticket holder, I am not embarrassed by this year's team that gives 110% every time they step on the court.

One other thing - you got the coach's name wrong. His name is Rick Ray not Rod Ray. The Dispatch should be embarrassed.

It's either Birney Imes or Peter Imes. Birney is the owner and Peter is his son in charge of operations.

It ain't me, but I agree with a lot of it. I also agree with Patdog but the saving grace is we don't have to see an unparalled bombardment by Coach34, Dawgat Auburn and a few more everytime we lose a game. As far as fans trying to sabotage the program, I haven't seen it and I know many who backed Stans that are backing coach Ray. The proof will be in the pudding and the writer is correct, all of this falls on the shoulders of Scott and he will live or die by this selection and if Ray gets us back to respectability, he will look good but if we are treading water trying to get to .500 in the league 3 or 4 years from now, both Stricklin and many of you are goingto look like idiots. And one other item, Stans would have been an idiot to take a job this year with what he is getting from MSU. I do know for a fact that he has had feelers on other jobs and only time will tell what happens.

I thought we were the laughing stock during our trip to Hawaii, when our blue chip forward couldn't last 5 mins without a timeout, when a deeply talented team couldn't make the NCAAs.

Birney would not have taken that much time to write about sports. The style of writing doesn't seem like Peter's. And John the younger Imes could have written this...or not. Or even Tanner...Birney's daughter.

I know them all very well...and they all like to write...so who knows.

I wonder why they didn't mention that the coach that took us to the Final Four was similarly "shown the door" (for much the same reasons as McCarthy) prior to Stansbury taking the job.

Funny that he chides them for spelling Rick Ray's name wrong while himself spelling "Sticklin".
