When would you fire a women's basketball coach in this day....

when $$$ is so vital due to NIL? What would it take? Is it the same as men's?

This has nothing to do with Purcell to clarify. Just curious of people's thoughts.

Probably wouldn’t in isolation and would try to avoid long or high buyout contracts.

If I was AD, I’d want a sense of ROI in Women’s BB if there’s data out there, impact on WBB performance on overall status in the conference (eg, if you’re by far the worst team in WBB and other sports, does it make you a target for getting dropped by the conference), donor/booster preference (eg, if you’re by far have major boosters who care about it, may need to make them happy). If it didn’t have major non-WBB impacts, I wouldn’t see myself putting money together to fire someone

I think the contracts going forward are going to make it easier to fire people so it's most likely not going to be a problem if a coach isn't performing

My current default setting on coaching terminations is measured by my response to one question: Do I care enough about the sport to then care whether Selmon is involved in hiring the replacement? If I don't care, fire away. If I care, then wait it out.

I don't care about women's basketball.

"Not a book you will see written by John Cohen for $500 please Alex?"

Since he reportedly forced our best one ever to leave and go to the arch rival of his very own alma mater and just returned to the Hump w/ the #1 team in the country......

It would have to be bad. Something like 3 losing seasons in a row.

In the NIL environment, the AD knows how much $ is being pumped into the sport relative to the competition. Expections should match reality.

Wasting money on sports that lose a bunch of money is not smart for schools like us in particular. We should spend minimal on a sport like women's basketball, and the only time we should change coaches is if a contract runs out from poor performance or someone bigger than us hires them away. We don't have the money to burn it on minor sports and compete in the sports that everyone cares about. Paying buyout money to a women's basketball coach should get the AD fired.

Much cheaper to fire a women's coach than men's coach but I wouldn't be in a hurry unless there was a serious problem.

3-4 consecutive years not making the NCAA after not extending their contract for at least two years prior in an effort to avoid a big buyout.

That’s just gonna make it tougher to hire someone.
The answer is never if it requires any material amount of money.

Dunno...would like to read/respond to your post, but a McDonald's breakfast ad is popping up every 15-20 seconds, so I'm giving up.

My solution is fund WBB at the minimum in order to field a team. Take the rest of the money and allocate it to football. Under no circumstances should you pay a buyout in WBB.

We didn’t care about WBB prior to the 2010s and I believe we should go back to that approach.

100% this. With Vic, women's basketball was bleeding money. With Purcell, we're bleeding money. With a new coach, women's basketball will still be bleeding money.

If you're a diehard women's basketball fan that just wants to see the team succeed regardless of circumstances, that's fine and II get it. From a sheer dollars point of view, however, there is no case that can be made for paying a buyout for a sport like this.

The real question that needs to be asked is... why should we continue to offer these types of salaries for sports that do not come close to generating profit for the university? And bear in mind that I didn't say that I think we should cancel the programs because I absolutely do not. I don't understand, however, why we're paying $1.5M annually for women's basketball staff, $250K for a volleyball coach, $200k for golf, etc. It is simply not necessary
