I was hoping for at least another NCAAT 1st round bounce, but there won't even be a chance at that.... unless there is a first ever winning conference record for coach with multiple major upsets.

Cue the Bobby Knight speech: "I am sick and tired of an 8-10 record in this 17'n league!"

Jans has hit a clear ceiling and flubbed an entire season now.

His love of "defensive hustle" as a trait to both pay and play players - regardless of their other abilities - has cost us an offensive ceiling. He didn't develop anything outside of what Cam Matthews and Shawn Jones have always been across 4 seasons.

And it's poetic that overplaying Shawn Jones got Hubbard hurt and potentially nuked this season.

This team peaked against Memphis last year and has been trending down ever since.

We're going to give him another year to try to fix it - but you have to ask yourself, is that just wasting Hubbard's senior year? Jans just wasted his junior year. If so - why not pull the plug.

Before you say "this is historically one of State's best runs" - remember, we can all pay players now and lots of SEC schools are going on their best runs of making the tournament. That fact moved our floor up much more than Jans. In 5 or so years when people figure this out, the line for firing will move up - Every SEC team that doesn't win a tournament game in 3 years should be considering firing the coach.

Jans does get some slack but he is clearly struggling to find an identity for his team. He was clearly dissatisfied with what he had defensively last season and his tinkering wound up getting us neither this season. We haven't hit mid December and this season is OVER. This cannot happen next season.

Obviously he gets another crack at it next year but something feels off, no doubt about that. We have a hodge podge mix of players and we have no idenity has a team anymore.

I think you’re going to have the seasons sometimes in this portal era, when you’re building a new team each year. It sucks but hopefully it’s rare and Jans gets back on track next season. I think we’d be silly to want to move on from a proven commodity.

3 NCAA tourneys based off some stable pieces on the roster vs a complete tank of a season with the team he build completely isn’t exactly a good sign for the future.

He will get 26-27 season to fix it. We could be hiring a new football and basketball coach next year.

I think Jans is a good coach but whoever he has in charge of evaluating these players needs to be let go.
100% this.

Admitted former Jans apologist here. 🤚 I won't apologize for supporting him as a defensive and even floor coach. I still think he is fine-to-good at that. But I feel I now owe everyone an apology for missing my evaluation on his recruiting eye. It seems I have totally whiffed... much like he whiffs annually on portal players.

I can point to specific circumstances where he had the players in position to win games. We just don't have the players to do it. Other than Hubbard, who he has now ridden like a rented mule.

I want to not be overly negative, but through last year, it sure feels like most of the major contributors to his teams were already on campus (or on the way) when he took the job. DJ, Cam, Tolu, Hubbard, etc.

*Honorable mention for Melendez - I thought he may be the only one who lived up to expectations. Oh, and I liked Shak Moore. The rest (n)

Jans moving forward needs to avoid portal offers to guys not coming from Power 4/Big East unless they're putting up video game numbers in a mid-major. I didn't understand how this year's team could have such high expectations considering how much they lost, and that this is where the transfers came from:

-Georgetown / Illinois
-Arizona St.
-Kansas State / Samford / JuCo
-UAB / JuCo
-Montana St. / UT-Arlington
-Wichita St. / Florida St.

Not exactly an inspiring list of basketball powerhouses. Not surprisingly, the one transfer who appears to be a legit SEC starter is the one from Georgetown (Epps).

We need to go all in on Erick Dampier Jr. in 2028.

He’s the 17th highest paid coach in the country and we don’t get the results to match that salary. Numerous people insist that our basketball NIL is in good shape, that we had enough money to go out and get players during the last portal. If that is true it’s really an indictment of Jan’s that this is what he came up with. It would also lend some credibility to the talk that he is not well liked by his players, that the word is out and guys with options just don’t want to play for him.

Been saying it for a while. Other coaches use that against him in the transfer portal player market

Just from seeing him scream on TV he comes across as unlikable. In one of the early games this year he absolutely lit into Euro while players like Jones and Achor were absolutely sucking

Too many coaches are focused on who they can get out of the portal, instead of focusing on retaining players they have. See MSU Men's and Women's Basketball.

over/under on at least one thread saying that we overpaid for O'Connor ..I'm betting that it will be the third SEC series
You can rest assured some idiot will say before year 2 is over that we need to fire him.

Jans isn’t a bad coach IMO. Getting that first team to the NCAAT was an outstanding job. His second team was about where they should have been.

The last two years have been disappointing. Last year we certainly should have made a run in the NCAAT, and fell pretty short. That team had plenty of talent to make a run. He couldn’t get that team back on the right track after that Kentucky loss.

Idk what it is about this year but Jans seems kinda checked out a bit. His team actually has some nice pieces McGee/Epps are good imo. Missed pretty big down low though. My god.

If we're not pretty clearly a Top 15 level team, then those threads should start early considering his salary. It's not like he's taking over a dumpster fire.

The problem I have with Jans & staff is the lack of development offensively, lack of a true PG, & allowing the bigs to shoot so many 3s.

He's so concerned about defense, almost an obsession, he forgets we need to score points.
