I know what you mean.. I think there are a lot of examples like this when we go back and look at older film. As a fan base, I think we are pretty good at evaluating our own talent from game days, and back then, he didn't compare to the LP's & Rozier's, but we look at that film today, and it's like, We could use a guy like that on the team this year.
Terrell Farley. His first year in Lincoln, it looked like he would be one of the best LB's to ever play the game.
Wasn't Pickens like the 2nd or 3rd overall pick to the Falcons, that one is still a head scratcher.

This would have been my choice as well. Most of the old school coaches will tell you he was one of the top 3 greatest athletes ever to play here.
Strength and conditioning at the time was about developing bulk in our backs. Diedrick simply bulked up too much and lost his speed at the end of his junior/senior seasons. This really hurt us because our option game was Crouch keeping the ball most of the time. Eric was great...but the team would have been better with a faster DD getting the ball on the edge.
I agree. Crouch was awesome, but if only he had the backs of the 93-97 years. We might have won another MNC.
If our team didn't have fumbleitis all season 99 is another National title. That Mike Brown led D was championship caliber defense.
There was so much greatness in that '99 team. Crouch's whole career would have been better with a better backfield. If folks couldn't just key on Eric. I often wonder how that great '01 Miami team could have handled us if that were the case. A big "What if?". Things that make you go hmmmm.

That Miami '01 team was pretty darn good...needed more speed on D and a few better OL to contend better with that.
Not to go off topic, but crazy that a lot of Callahan's recruits were better pro's than in college (Slauson, Brandon Jackson, Zac Bowman...)

We didn't have the defense, not even the best RB in our history would have changed the outcome of that game. We were way out athleeted on that side of the ball, big time. Yeah I just said athleeted.
Don't get me wrong. 2001 Miami was a great team. Loaded top to bottom. I just think that Eric was carrying that team alone in that game. With some more weapons in the backfield maybe we'd be more competitive. But you're right. Our D was not enough to win the MNC that year.
It's Crouch for me. The way he took his ball and ran home, when the Rams wanted the position change SMDH
EC truly gave 110% to NU. He was too banged up by the time he landed at the NFL level. A tremendous athlete who masked our problems for years.
Will never understand how anyone could hold a grudge against Crouch. Kid was a baller, one of our best QB's ever, and I don't give a rats *** about his NFL career. So what if he said he'd play WR and changed his mind, he gave it a shot and found out he preferred QB, when he could have hung around and collected paychecks and didn't. Yes I know what happened at Nebraska as well, but I'm pretty sure we were the one's who benefitted big time when he came back, as somebody mentioned above, he masked our problems for a couple of seasons and was our last great QB.
