I've always heard a lot about the talent level of Mississippi high school football talent but don't hear nearly as much about the level of Mississippi high school basketball talent. Is this just because football is king in Mississippi? OR, have I just missed the threads discussing this?

However, in my opinion the greatest period of talent for Mississippi was in the early to mid nineties. Othello Harrington, Ronnie Henderson, Jesse Pate, Erick Dampier, Vandale Thomas, Antonio McDyess, Marlon Dorsey, Eric Washington, Marcus Bullard, Marcus Mann, Michael DeGruy, and a few others were all major talents that could have played for most any program in the United States and all packed within a few classes of each other.

Basketball talent in MS has been great for at least the last 25 years. Jackson has become a hotbed of talent. It started with the great Orsmond Jordan Murrah teams of the 80's and 90's. Then Lanier and Provine picked it up from there. I played in the Above The Rim summer league in Jackson started by Wayne Brent in the mid-nineties. There were so many D1 athletes it was ridiculous.

All you need is one elite player and you have a Nationally ranked team. In football, you need dozens. You go to a Jackson Public School football game, the home crowd is practically empty. In basketball, they can pack Mississippi Coliseum.

However, the emphasis in this State is in football. When talented athletes are young, they're pushed into football, instead of basketball or baseball, where Mississippi could actually make a national impact.
