Which teams over achieved this year?

It was a team mired in controversy, but it sometimes gets lost that Plainfield North had a great, fairly unexpected run. As a school, they had an 0-5 all-time playoff record before this year. The biggest surprise to me was their one-sided victory over Bradley in Bourbonnais. Will be interesting to see how they perform going forward. Sometimes a great playoff run can set the tone for a program moving forward.

This would be my vote as well.

Since there is a thread regarding underachieving teams, let's go the other way and discuss teams who had great years when nobody expected it.
Benet.

Little pre-season pub. Semi-final run, granted had a great path similar to 2012. Maybe one Division 1 player on the roster.

I echo those 2 sentiments but also put a good word in for Rolling Meadows. 11-1 with little hype.

Glenbard West. Probably not a single player going on to play in college at any level and they made the semis.

St Charles East. I don't think anyone thought they would beat either Batavia or St Charles North or get to the quarter finals.

There will be some guys playing at next level. Moorehead, Goleash and Samuta to name 3. Junior WR Pierce will be a nice late bloomer at 6'4" with a frame that will fill out to 200-210 if he hits the weights.

I 2nd what CAPN mentioned. Plenty of D3/NAIA/Maybe D2 talent on that roster. Maybe Pierce at the FCS level, but he's a good volleyball guy as well.

Just becuase their was no D1 kids on that roster, let's not act like there was no talent.

Why maybe underrated by many, I believe the Herald News had Plainfield North in the top 3 in the area at the beginning of the year

Based on the Kings Challenge, Maine South appears to be quite the overachiever. Only one person picked the Hawks to win 8A.

First time I did not pick the Hawks!!! I'm sickened.

That didn't go unnoticed but when I came to my choice for 8A, I felt like picking GW would have exposed me as a delusional. Picking a #26 seed like MS might have appeared laughable, unless you had inside knowledge that 75 would be moving onto the DL.

He had been there a while and as the playoffs went on he got more time.

I may be reading into this too much. But the terms "over achieving" or "over performing" suggest the talent level wasn't there but the performance was. I am not sure that was true with PN. They were a solid team.

If you want to say "surprising," that seems to suggest the talent was there but was overlooked by most people.

In that regard I would say PN was more surprising than over achieving.

Never said that there was no talent. But compared to the previous Hetlett playoff teams, this on may have been the least gifted with perhaps the lightest O and D lines and not the real game breakers on offense that they have had in the past. And then to go on and beat NV, HF and EV... that's a pretty good achiecment

Three top shelf wins but any Hetlet team that doesn't win conference can hardly be deemed overachievers. Did they overcome some horrible injuries to restore some respectability to the season with a playoff run through three top 10 teams? Absolutely

Okay, I'll agree with that. Maybe I just got caught up with the "were playing with house money" quotes. I will say that there have been more skilled Hetlet teams that did not achieve as much as these guys

Anyone with a pulse plays up at Reavis. Lower level results are deceiving.

Flyer overachieved IMO as they are the only team in my knowledge to volunteer to play up and win a title.
They may be the only team to ever volunteer to play up, period, although I am not 100% certain.

Flyer overachieved IMO

Overachieve: "Perform better or achieve more success than expected."

After about week 2, The Flyer were favored and expected to handily beat every team (from Illinois) that they played. Which they did.

Agree with you, just pointed out that the "expected" thing to do would have been stay in 6A. Actually now that I think about, I'd have liked to see ESL v PR.

Agree with you

Not so fast, Doctor! Here is the flaw in my last reply: "After about week 2".... Myself along with most of the poster on this board do not Follow ESL. We (I), No that they are always pretty good, sometimes really good. And after Week 2 I had my expectations set. Okay, fine. But lets just say that someone like you knows that they lacked experience last season due to the strike, maybe a possible letdown in the program, questionable numbers coming back for 2016 (Like a roster of maybe 42) And, hey, lets do 7A anyway and take on a top Mizo team. So, starting back in August, maybe they did overachieve what was expected. Make sense?

Just a quick note the Flyers period to play up in 7A last year. When you period up its for 2 years. which was last year and this year. So technically they would have to period the IHSA to play up again next year which they more than likely will.

I'm kind of hoping Flyer does not period up next year. I would love to see a Flyer vs Prarie Ridge matchup in the 6A playoffs. I believe Estes and Thomas will have graduated? (Not sure), but a lot of that Flyer D coming back? Think PR loses a RB and some lineman but their QB is back.

Would have loved to see this years matchup but I think next years would/could be equally good!!

There is a difference between overachieving and some posters overinflating.

Five of the seven wins were against teams with a losing record possessing a 12-33 aggregate mark. One of the two wins against teams with a winning record was at the expense of a CPS team. In addition, they played 6 home regular season games. However, the 28-25 loss to Lemont in Week 3, was a noteworthy performance. The weekly pre-game bluster at the 50-yard line is a disappointing spectacle, by the way.
