I have a Ford F150 powerboost with 7.2 KW generator, plenty of power cords and a full tank of fuel. Plus, our gas log fireplace will heat the house. No worries here.

You going to spend $12,000 on something you might need 2 or 3 times before having to replace it in 20 years (or sooner)? I'll bundle up & suffer.
Depending on if your house is heated with propane/natural gas or heat pump you can spend alot less and get a generator that will do just about everything but run your AC.

Temperatures here will be a lot like the past two or three winters in addition to ice or snow or whatever happens - current forecast is 11 Sunday night and 4 Monday night. There goes the grass again.

New models showing less than half the precipitation from this mornings runs. Good trend. Needs to keep dropping to zero.
Idk… GFS QPF has held steady around 2.5” for jackson metro area since yesterday. Thats essentially a measurement that shows a rain equibalient total precip. Snow typically is a 10:1 ratio to rain. 1 inch of rain = 10 inches of snow. 2.5” QPF is a serious amount of precip. If only half of that comes as frz rain/sleet/snow it will be a mess in central MS

The mid day runs and the midnight runs aren't as reliable as the morning and evening runs. Those runs use actual sounding data from weather balloons while the others are just computers extrapolating data. The 00z runs should start coming in about 90 minutes from now.

Tell the balloons and the computers to get on the same page.

The runs aren’t good any time of the day. They’ll make Charmin feel like 220 grit sandpaper.

The Canadian and UKMet threw some curveballs.

I caved today and got a Predator 5000 watt inverter generator. Just needed to keep well running and some internet. I have a special needs child, so it’s not fun at my house with no internet. Wood burning fireplace for heat but hopefully in Desoto County it will mostly be snow.

The forecast is trending better. Yesterday morning N MS was slated for 18 inches. Now we may only get some ice. Looking better!

Which direction are the latest models having it go? What is a good source for current forecast on this?
The overnight and current trend with most models is pushing the heavier snow north but replacing it with ice especially across the Midsouth. Wherever the ice ends up it’s going to be really bad and what’s worse is that it’s not going to warm up anytime soon. I’d take 2 feet of snow before getting a bunch of freezing rain.

I use Pivotal Weather to look at all the models.

For times when we lose power for extended time I back feed a small generator into my main house panel. I have a 30 amp 4 wire cord run under the house with a male plug on the end of it. It is connected to a 2 pole breaker in the main panel and is marked with colored tape so it is off unless using the generator. I also mark all of the high current breakers and main with a different color tape. I plug into the generator. Turn off the main and all marked high current circuits. I go through the house and turn off ceiling fans and lights that are on most of the time. Then turn on the generator breaker. It will power refrigerator, freezer, tvs, and lights as needed. I have a gas infrared heater for times like this and gas water heater so we get by pretty good. Use a gas and charcoal grill for cooking. Only takes about 10 minutes to get everything set up. I also have 4 oil lamps and plenty of lamp oil. The 94 icestorm broke me in that we had nothing for lights and power. I was not prepared for 2 weeks without power. I am now.

The forecast models are all over the board. The only thing that looks to be sure is SOMEBODY is likely to get a really bad ice event .

When does the next big update come out and who should I pay attention to that isn't driving clicks and will give me no nonsense takes on the models?

I think there will be another model this afternoon. There are 2 YT channels I follow and they are usually spot on. They breakdown what the models are showing.

Ryan Hall, Y'all Weather
He typically drops a video around noon covering the morning models.

Direct Weather
He will drop a video covering the afternoon models before 5 PM .
