I have had opinions all along.
I guess it's a failing that I can't separate loyalty. I felt as long as he was HC of the team I care about I was going to defend him AND the players. I have also long believed that not everything that happened was something he could control. Unlike many, I don't get wrapped up in personnel decisions because if I knew better I should be on the sidelines and you don't want that. Last time I strapped it on we were running the single wing with a little Split T mixed in near the end.
For clarity purposes, I've only made my decision to speak because I see RU losing a large portion of it's always fragile fan base if he continues. Remember I was there when RU was drawing 15-16,000 for Lehigh and Lafayette. That to me would be as big a disaster as any loss and likely more when you consider all the financial issues we all know. You have to give people hope if you want them to pony up and that's in short supply now.
Finally, being a fan and rooting for RU is fun for me, not life or death. If I ever find myself getting as upset as some here do, I'll just walk away.
I think you've hit the collective nail on the head with this post. As posted plenty of times before, my opinion is that fan/donor apathy and reduction due to negligible or zero hope for Flood-coached teams is more dangerous than a temporary financial hit.
I've been vocal about wanting Flood fired after the season because after September I decided that move would not only benefitting Rutgers football, but also preventing the university's overall athletic and flagship reputation.
All this nonsense about posters wanting to be proven correct and throw crow in each other's faces is pointless. As both a Rutgers alum and football diehard, I'm going to be forced to think long and hard whether I'd bother to continue watching Flood-coached teams after this season. It's just a game/entertainment,and therefore not worth getting upset over poor team performance, baffling schemes/personnel decisions, unwatchable coach-speak and worst off all player academic transgressions and arrests past a certain point. If pushed beyond that point I may take a reprieve from the program, and would not nearly be the only one doing so. The difference between us on this board and more casual fans, especially non-alums with little other connection to Rutgers, is that it would take a long time (or perhaps a nearly-impossible 10-win season) to win the latter back, if they'd ever be interested in returning.
Rebuilding the team roster and units would likely be a tall task; rebuilding a fanbase seems exponentially more difficult, especially with a grueling B1G schedule ahead.
