Who is a real contender?

The best team in my area is Essex and has been over the past 4 seasons. They have lost the last 3 state titles, but they were playing really good teams. They are slightly different this year, as their passing game isn't as good, but their power run game more than makes up for the pass. (Any teams passing game will go down when you lose a QB like they had, just check the VHSL record books). They are a big physical team, but lack numbers just like everyone else in 1A, so they have holes when players go down to injury. With that being said, I still think they have more talent then anyone else in 1A. But I can totally see a scenario where Essex begins to play down to there district competition, and with that stupid first round bye, meets up with a team that is hitting on all cylinders and they lose. (AltaVista, Central, Sussex, Franklin) But if that's not the case and they continue to get better and stay focused, I don't know if there is a team in 1A that has the right group of kids to beat them.

To beat Essex you will have to be a complete team. You will probably need a couple standout players on offense that can put the ball in the end zone early and often. Is there any team out there with those makings? I know teams are having good years, but is there a team that is way more special than usual? Who are the best football players in 1A on the offensive side of the ball? I have posted before about the best player I have seen so far and that is Malik Martin, running back from Essex. I think he had 11 carries for 227 yards and a kickoff return for a TD against Northumberland. I know Northumberland is not a good team, but that is still impressive. I am not trying to say just give the title to Essex now and not play anymore games blah blah, I just was curious to who could line up and beat Essex if both teams played a good game?

This is an excellent question. As far the most complete team around...I'm going to say on any given night GW could meet that standard. Not every night, but they have their moments. We will still need to wait on Radford. This week will help tell that tale. I have not seen Burton play or enough in the East. I don't think this season we have someone to just say, "It is their's to lose." I've felt that way in the past. 2011-2013. I almost wish we could skip a few weeks for some schools and get to their next real test which is the postseason.

GW has all of the pieces to be in the Finals vs imo either Riverheads or Essex but we have to put it all together like we did against Honaker. And we definitely have the depth to play with anyone but it will all come down to our pass D if it hold up I think we have a good shot to at least make the semis. Our run D is amazing but like I've said on here our pass D is suspect at times.

Blaster, I hear a lot about the pass D of GW being suspect. I haven't seen them play but that surprises me with the athletes they have. What seems to be the issue? Do they not get a good pass rush or are they just undisciplined back there?

The QB for Honaker was running for his life all night!!! They blitzed like crazy. They sure did get a good pass rush that night.

Yeah like Braves said our pass rush is very good we get to the QB a ton is the DB's they are just so young and love to crack people so they get out of place. And by the time they try and recover it's to late they are beat over the top the talent is most definitely there they just need to be taught better.
