Who is going to surprise us this year?

Funny how times have changed. In the 30+ years Eddie Dean coached Madison County, they were in the State final game 9 times. That is a little over one state final appearance every 3 years. Quite impressive. Since his retirement, MC has not won a playoff game (I think). This year, they are actually hosting a playoff game for the first time since 1999 (they won the title that year). Maybe Madison is turning the corner and will be relevant again in a few years!

But the topic was who will surprise this year. I think Central Woodstock can win 2-3 games. Might not but they have the talent. They beat Clarke but turn around and get shutout by Strasburg! If they all get on the same page, lookout.

I remember seeing that Madison team play New Kent in 1999 and won 34-33 I believe. Raymond Kirkley was one of the best running backs I ever saw in person. I believe he went on to play at Pitt if I'm not mistaken.

That New Kent game was awesome. I felt at the time that the winner of that game was gonna win State. MC went on to beat Floyd in the finals. The '98 MC/Powell Valley championship game featured Kirkley (yes, Pitt) and Julius Jones (Notre Dame). I have never seen 2 HS running backs that good on the same field before or since!

By the way, your boys are playing well and might surprise a few teams in this years playoffs.

I never saw the Jones brothers play in person. Probably the best I ever saw in person was Antonio Procise from Sussex from the early 90s. Guy is still a legend in those parts. He signed with UVA but not sure exactly what happened once he got there.

As for KW I hope they do well in the playoffs as they are a great group of kids. I haven't seen them play in 3 years other than the games they have played Essex as I'm associated with Essex although I plan on attending at least the KW jv games next year as the kids I used to coach in youth will be in 8th grade next year and are very talented. I know my screenname may throw some people off but I've had it for 10 years on here and didn't want to change it

You missed out ban. In 1995, Thomas set record of 462 yards against JIB, while Boo Sensabaugh for the Raiders had over 300. Best RB duel I've ever seen. It was on YouTube if you wanna search for it.

I watch it all the time. This swvafootball user has several 90s games on his channel.

Nothing will ever top the 97 PV/Appy game. Best HS game I've witnessed. PV won state in Div 2 A, AHS won it Div1. A, and GC won it Div. 1 AA, but lost to both Appalachian and PV.
