My son and I got into a heated debate about this last night, and he's a whopping 14 years old so he obviously never saw Brett play. I took the side of Brett, he had Jeter. Probably both great enough that you could argue for either, but to me, Brett won hands down. I am 47, so perhaps it's a case of just getting older and relishing the days of yesteryear.

Brett's WAR (Wins Above Replacement) was 88.4 over the course of 21 seasons.
Jeter's WAR was 71.8 over 20 seasons.
Post-season: Brett .337, Jeter .308.
Jeter played in more than 150 post-season games (to Brett's 43) because he played in a different era (more post-season games, in general) and he had a stronger team around him. Jeter's team had more success than Brett's team, and Jeter received a lot more press.
Otherwise, it's not really close. Brett > Jeter
Honestly, I have never heard of WAR before. Just spent two minutes educating myself on it. Looks like fun, but because so many other things can change along the way I'm not sure how accurate it is. Very interesting stat though, glad you brought it up.

Now hold on, do we really know about Brett's success off the field? Back in his day nobody facetweeted and there was no interweb. Your argument is a good one, but it's denied. We are only talking about on the field here.

i would blindly bet jeter's past accomplishments vs. 'the field'...i still think he wins going away.
