Gonna have to agree. I think all 3 are gonna see the field at some point this year, but I think Lee is gonna start. Hes only got 1 year left, and with the increase in the talent of our skill players, I dont think we necessarily need Tyler Russell to play a big role for us this year. Spreading things out I think will help a little with Tysons height disadvantage and he has a pretty decent arm, so I think he will be much improved with the new offensive scheme coming in.
As you said, he's a brave little SOB. And he's tough as hell, considering that he kept playing despite the pounding your damn monsters on the DL gave him. He's plenty mobile and has a fairly strong, accurate arm. The only drawback is he's a midget. But putting him in the shotgun will help him see. I think we'll try to redshirt Russell if at all possible. The key to this will be Relf. If he can improve and be a solid #2 for us, I tink we'll be able to pull off redshirting Russell. If not, we might see a platoon between Lee and Russell by the last 1/3 of the season.
The Parade All-American true freshman QB from a nearby school that won a state title will be the most popular player on the team. The coaches know he is their future and make him the #2 QB during two-a-days and start telling reporters about how they want to get him live game experience. But most of the games are close, and the steady, heady senior JUCO QB plays better than expected and takes 90% of the snaps. That's what happened in '97 with Miller and Patridge.
Lee is the best QB we've had at State in a long time. Croom should've been fired after the La. Tech game for starting Carroll ahead of him. The only negative about him is his size.

It gives us the best chance to win next year with an experienced QB getting the starts. And, it allows Mullen and the coaches to work out the kinks of the offense without having Russell in there having his confidence hurt.

but I don't think last year's performance by any QB we put on the field could justify calling them the best QB we've had in long time. Didn't UGA start their QB that's leaving as Freshman? 08 LSU QB's?? Sure, Russell will make some mistakes, but at least he can see the receivers.

Another thing is, the o-line probably will be better- I'm hoping for average here, and that's probably wooly, but he will have better receivers to throw to, so that's also in his favor. Plus we also have some RB's that are pretty good to.

True freshmen, even the great ones, rarely do anything productive at QB. If he can keep Lee and Relf healthy, you'd be better off redshirting the freshman.
Tyson Lee is the best quarterback we have had at State in many years. His completion percentage last year was remarkable considering the poor blocking he received. The combination of his arm, his smarts, his toughness, his experience, the new offense and some better blocking this year makes him hard to beat. He will be a great mentor for Tyler Russell.
I agree on Lee. He brings a quickness at QB that can make it tough on a defense. However, your OL made him have to use that quickness way too often. If they can give him some time, he might actually be serviceable.
I felt the same way about Kevin Fant. I still feel bad for that guy. He did have a decent amount of potential. It's just impossible to do anything when you're throwing from your back on every play.

But it's a no-win scenario for Lee, because all the idiots in the MSU fanbase who know nothing about football (that would be about 75% of the fanbase) will be clamoring for Russell to play regardless.
Russell has all the tools to be a great one, but if Mullen is thinking about the future of the program, he will ignore the pleadings of the MSU fanbase & redshirt Russell.

with you and, yes, Coach. After watching Lee last year, he definitely surprised me. Out from under the inept staff we had last year, I think he has a great chance to be a good SEC QB this year.
He graduated early and went through spring practice. Also, he didn't gain the starting role full time until their senior QB was injured. Plus, he pretty much sucked his freshman year (I believe he double his TD total with INTs).
I am also pretty sure that Lee redshirted last year for LSU but I am not 100% certain.

completion % isn't everything. let's look at qb rating before we go putting tyson lee up on a pedestal (not sure where he ranks in that at all)
hell, Vince Young led the NCAA in completion % and we see how good of a qb he is at the next level.

I could give rats *** as to what completion percentage means to a QB's success on the next level. I will gladly take a Vince Young caliber college QB at state for the next 100 years and not give a 17 how well he does in the pros after State.

I did not see any problems with velocity last year. Can he throw the ball 60 yards? Probably not, but who gives a 17. Moreover, I did not watch Russell that much this year, but in the state champ game I certainly didn't get the impression that he was knocking receivers on their asses with his throws. I am not saying he doesn't have a strong arm...but I certainly wasn't blown away by it.

...Coach Dan Mullen has already designed the playbook for him with roll outs and other means to minimize his height. He will start, Relf may come in on 3rd and short, and he will try to Redshirt Tyler Russell. If Lee gets hurt, he will try to go with Relf. Also, Terrance Davis is staying at QB, while also playing some WR. He is 5-11 185, and ran a 4.42 in high school.
to throw a true freshmen in the fire immediately behind our offensive line when we have an experienced guy that completed 60% of his passes last year and threw more TDs than picks--when is the last time we had someone do that? This is a no brainer.
