I'm taking James Franklin.

Although if this search goes into the New Year, that means it Malzahn.

I'm thinking it's malzahn also, at least I hope it is. I think it would be funny if they hired les miles though

Y'all will say I'm crazy, but I honestly feel like it will be Jim Harbaugh for some reason.

I think Texas wants a pro style offense, not a gimmick offense. They want to be Bama, and Harbaugh's Stanford teams were the closest to Bama's style IMO.

Also, Harbaugh seems to be an attention *****, and that would get him tons of it.

just a hunch

Mullen**... I have no idea but...

I don't think it will be Gus, I don't think he is established enough and I can easily see D coordinators figuring his offense out next year. I think Franklin would be a great fit.

I think UT has screwed up.

If they are going to force Mack out, looks like they are waiting for a later date to keep the buyout down.

By then the top contenders will all be either hired to new spots, or they will pull a Saban and get huge extensions to their contract.

I was banking on Art Briles. Lotsa pluses for UT if they could get him.

Nick Saban isn't off the board for those guys. But I think Charlie Strong is the top guy. The longer it takes the more and more likely Malzahn becomes a target.

Oh My God! Saban has spoken the magic words!

"The way this sort of got spun, it was a little bit more like, 'OK, he got a new contract at Alabama, so he's going to stay at Alabama instead of going to Texas,'" Saban told ESPN.com on Saturday. "I never considered going to Texas. That wasn't even a conversation.
"I knew that if Mack stepped down, there would probably be an opportunity, but it wasn't something I was interested in doing, not at this stage in my career."

I think it will go to Ed Orgeron and he'll attempt to get Petrino as OC in that scenario I could easily see Lane Kiffen being offered for the special teams coach. That would be a decent start to the staff.

My Thoughts:

NOT:
- Nick Saban- Let's face it... he would be absolutely stupid to leave Bama. Bama couldn't match Texas money, but when you make as much as he does, it's just a number, anyway
- Jim Harbaugh- He's been successful in SF... certainly no incentive to take off to a college job
- Dan Mullen, Les Miles, or Manny Diaz- cause don't be a dubmass (although it would be funny as hell)

Possibly:
- Gus Malzahn- He's had successful offenses everywhere he's been. Some may think it's a gimmick, but it's worked and worked well with the right personnel. His "lack of experience" on a big time stage is a minus.
- Bobby Petrino- Great offensive coach (right up Texas' alley), but carries a lot of baggage. Not that many Texas fans would care...

Short List:
- Charlie Strong
- Art Briles- Not sure how the Big 12 feels about cannibalism... but probably is not as against it as the SEC. Texas runs the show, anyway
- My darkhorse pick... Chip Kelly. He has not been wildly successful but has done OK by NFL standards, but he was excellent at Oregon. If he wants an "in" to get back into college, I bet Texas would give him a strong look.

On June 26, 2013 the NCAA Committee on Infractions issued its report concluding the investigation into Oregon's use of football scouting services. Kelly received an 18-month show-cause penalty, which would make his hiring by another NCAA institution difficult.

I think the people at USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Nebraska, Tennessee, Penn State, Florida etc. have way unrealistic expectations. I think Texas is now gonna join this group. Money and past history will not have as much of an effect in the future.

It's going to be Saban. Don't let a little extension at Bama fool ya. I'm only halfway joking... Nothing with Saban is surprising anymore.

Would Meyer be considered?

So you expect a guy who's still in Super Bowl contention, who lost last year's SB to his brother, would leave a team a few weeks before the playoffs to take less/equal money and more problems (boosters, recruits, Texas brand, etc)? Petrino and Saban left the NFL but they weren't anywhere near coaching conference championship quality teams. Zero chance. Maybe if he had gone to UT... But saying he'd go there is very "Gruden to Tenn" to me.

Who said a word about him taking the job tonight? He could take it after the season. Again, I'm not saying It will happen....just that I think it COULD. We'll see.

ETA: And if you think Harbaugh would be making less/equal money...you haven't seen what all Texas has to offer. He could make damn near 10 million a year plus Lomghorn network ownership, etc....THere's a lot of reasons for any big name to at least take a look at that job.

Charlie Strong cant get along with the Louisville media. Just think of him dealing with the Texas media. Trainwreck.

Would be an excellent hire.

Tressel comes with NCAA sanctions until the 2017 season. The NCAA nailed him when he resigned at Ohio State.

I agree Tressel would the be the prefect fit, but Texas can't afford to that.

After getting turned down by Harbaugh, Texas should make two more phone call:

1. David Shaw - Perfect offense and type of coach for Texas

2. James Franklin - I think Franklin would kill it at Texas. He is a smart intellectual coach that gets it. It's no fluke what he has done.
