Why would those candidates be any better than an internal search?

Not sure I indicated they would bring better candidates. However, search committees typically do have the ability to reach out to people in a more discreet manner. Sometimes internal searches will limit their searches to the best person that they are familiar with and not necessarily the best candidate. With that said, the search firm is going to reach out to candidates that meet the requirements their client wants. They don't just bring any 3-5 people to the table. .
