Gottfried has a much better record than Stansbury as far as non-conference? Maybe he does, I'm too lazy to look it up. Whatever the case, I like the way that we do our OOC schedule. We have a few cupcakes to experiment with some things like player lineups, some average teams, and some pretty good teams that are comparable to what we face in the SEC. And what ends up happening is we usually end up with a really solid team.
The other thing about the non-conference schedule stuff is don't you want to play better LATE in the season? Doesn't that factor into the committee's selection more than having a really good non-conference record? That's the impression I get every year.
Plus, if we played a bunch of cupcakes and won all of our non-conference games, but then went 6-10 or 7-9 or even 8-8 in SEC play, I would think that would hurt us a lot more than playing some decent opponents and losing a few games and then going 8-8 in the SEC.
Finally, Gottfried always seems like he is on the verge of losing control of his team. You can say what you want about Stans and guys transferring, but I have no doubt that he has control of his team. Even if that means losing a Delk or two or Kodi Augustus. He makes our guys play defense and hustle, which a lot of them don't want to when they come in from high school or AAU where they apparently don't teach that, and if they don't like it, they can hop their happy *** to Rick Pitino's bench. And unfortuantely it usually takes an embarassing loss to South Alabama or San Diego for those morons to realize that what Stansbury is trying to teach them is what is going to get them their points and to the Big Dance.
