In the spirit of the debate as to whether Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter should have their jersey #'s retired I pose this question to you.

If you could retire one players jersey from the school you support, who would it be?

I laugh only cause I’m not a Prime/Shedeur hater, but retiring his jersey is INSANE work. I hope he has a great NFL career and Prime builds Colorado up to a contender, but we all know that Kordell Stewert is the best QB in that school’s history and his number isn’t even retired. Before anyone brings up stats, Colorado ran the option then.

Danny looking forward to this thread 😂

For Virginia Tech, Bruce Smith is probably the best to ever play for Tech, but Michael Vick put them on the map. I'd give a slight nod to Vick
Vick made a lot of young boys in my generation proud to be from Virginia and dream of playing football for Virginia Tech. It’s wild how he had the culture on lock before he served his time. I still hope Nike releases the Vick 1, 2 and 3s since he’s coaching at a Nike school. Mike Vick!

Shedeur went 13-11 at Colorado, retiring the jersey is absurd. Hunter is fine, nothing wrong with that, especially not at a place like Colorado but retiring the jersey of someone who went 13-11 and didn't even win the conference much less take you deeper is ridiculous. It's literally only happening because he's the HC's son. That's it, zero other reasons apply.

If they retire Sanders number that would just indicate how insignificant Colorado's football team is/has been. If you have to retire numbers of players who barely made it over .500 that's pretty bad.

When speaking on retiring jerseys I mean at the high school support... not college. Trying to translate this to high school game.

Darian Hagan and Eric Bieniemy were a NASTY backfield. Hagan went 28-5-2. Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook were damn good too. Stewart was 27-5-1. Montez, Klatt, and Detmer are damn good too.

First and foremost let me give respect to the ones already retired at Phoebus. Rest In Peace #1 Joemel Dennis killed after leaving practice in the early 90s — fun fact he is the older cousin to VA’s GOAT Ron Curry and the reason RC wore #1 in football and #22 in basketball, Rest In Peace #3 Ronnie Hendricks who died in a car crash with 3 of his friends in 2004 — QB of 1st ever state title team in 2001, and shout out #6 Antwan Womack who was a monster running the ball — have no clue where he is today.

Numbers I’d retire at Phoebus are #38 Elan Lewis but before him Xavier and Nathaniel Adibi wore it too. Also #10 Tajh Boyd finished a top 3 QB in nation and finished with 2 state titles (should’ve been 3 SB loss still hurts) and was starting QB for top 3 team in state history. #5 Jordan Bass would be in consideration because he had a top 5 season I’ve ever seen in the state in 2022.

What makes it so crazy for me is they just finished their careers there months ago. There should be some kind of waiting period unless the player passed away in my opinion.

💯. I can see retiring 12’s jersey with him winning the Heisman and for winning all of the awards he did. Definitely should’ve waited. Kinda tells you that Deion wanted to make sure it happens now cause once Florida State opens next year, he’s gone to Tallahassee. You think of all the great players Colorado had back in the 90s. Guys that actually signed with Colorado out of high school and won a ship. It’s wild to me Kordell Stewart isn’t in the rafters there. Shoot, Darian Hagan led them to the Natty and his # isn’t even in the rafters. Insane work!

I disagree with retiring numbers for highly successful athletes. I think that it's better for future players to wear the same number and strive for the excellence of their predecessor(s).

Salem has, or at least had, that tradition with #3.

Retiring the numbers of players who died tragically is a different matter.

He doesn’t even claim to be FSU alumni.

He also just made a lot of alumni upset with certain things he's said/done (nabbing Hunter is up there lol). I wouldn't necessarily say it's impossible for him to go back as coach but between his age (57) and the likely amount of time required in cooling heels amongst alumni/boosters I'm not sure I see a realistic scenario. Maybe if he did all this at 45 then by now things might have changed and they could lure him back but now? Doubtful at best.

Man you threw out some names I had not heard in years like Elan Lewis & the Adibi's... thanks for contributing.
