Why did RU burn that last time out?

I'm kind of surprised I don't see it brought up more here. Maybe it is and I've just missed it, but it sure looked like Rutgers had the Michigan State defense tired when we used our last time out. The announcers on BTN said something like "that time out was just what Michigan State needed, they were spent."

If Rutgers had scored a touchdown then instead of the field goal, it would have given RU the lead. Michigan State might have come back to score, but the lead could have changed the game if the score went to 28-24 -- forcing MSU to get a touchdown.

To me, that was the play that cost us the game.

agree, it got pushed out of everyones minds, we were in control and gave it up, don't believe it was a clock issue

Been burning timeouts for years now. For some reason they think calling a timeout to prevent a delay of game is more important than having timeouts at end of game. Perplexing to say the least.

It looked on the sidelines like Laviano was angry that the timeout was called when he was discussing it with Norries. The team looked ready for that play; they weren't confused and didn't look in disarray prior to the snap. That entire drive, which started at our own five, we were in control and MSU's defense was reeling. Why call a timeout deep in their end under those circumstances?!

a question here..... was the ball snapped before the timeout was recognized?.....Ray Lucas said something about two Mich state players blitzing that would
have had a clear shot at Laviano, in fact they were inside our line immediately......possibly the coaches saw the alignment and knew it was trouble and called the
timeout to avoid this.

Maybe. The guys on BTN made it look like RU just threw a life preserver to the defense though. They seemed pretty gassed.

The clock management by this staff is the worst in America. Whether it is entering the 4q with no timeouts vs Wazzu or the end of the first half vs Kansas or last night, this is just an overall showing of no idea what is going on with the clock.

Was happy when I saw them called it dead for the timeout. The defenders were almost there, so it was likely a screen but they looked way too close off the snap that he would have had to ground the ball anyways.

We had five in the backfield on that play. It would have been flagged for illegal formation.
That's it exactly. When I saw the line-up, I told the guy next to me that we were going to get penalized for 5 in the backfield. One of the wideouts was too far off the line of scrimmage.

After both of the burned timeouts, there was definitely squabbling right in front of us in row 11 of section 107 among the players about one or more of them being in the wrong place. Considering how much youth we have out there on offense, I'm pinning the lost timeouts on them, not McDaniels/Wilson/Flood.
