Why do people keep calling our football team "young"

That sounds like some "calm the masses" ******** over Mullen.

I doubt there here is another OL in the SEC with as many combined starts as us.
RBs are all experienced.
We have a 3 year Starter at TE.
RJohnson and Tuby have 3 years under their belt
Even Dak has plenty of experience at this point. Plus, a redshirt SR backing him up.
DL has plenty of starts.
LB has plenty of starts.
Secondary is the only spot where we are a little green, but that's because we rotate so many bodies back there.

The only thing that makes this team young is the amount of seniors... I think we have 7 or 8. But there are several guys with lots of experience.

We really are not young, but we have a lack of experience at some key spots, notably WR and the Secondary. Also QB when Dak is in the game, although I think that what he's gone through already this year has helped him gain experience fast.

They are considered old in the sense of returning starters with 19. They also have the closest percentage of upper class men to under class men in the SEC. 53%under class men to 47% upper class men. That's per Phil Steele.

Three seniors on both side. 1 is a RB that has backups that have proven to be as productive if not more. One of course is Gabe which will be a big piece of the puzzle to replace, and the other Siddoway?? On D we are young, while we do have a few juniors on the DL, we also have a lot of sophs and freshmens. The team seems to get better when Nickoe is out, Autry will be missed, and so will Skinner, but we have a lot of promise behind them. I just hope our secondary is like a fine wine, and gets better with age. Aside from Cox, the problems we've had back there aren't solely because of ability, it's mostly because of blown coverages.

We aren't young -- we aren't inexperienced. We just bring back everyone of consequence other than Gabe Jackson...

We had a significant amount of snaps played in the secondary at the beginning of the year. Maybe not much starting experience, but a bunch of experience. Love and Calhoun had combined to play in 25 and 13 games for us, and Jay Hughes had played in 26 at the start of this year... Hardly "new".

Now, the injuries have been a setback -- no doubt. Having Love and Calhoun miss time -- Redmond out with the suspension -- Arrington and Hughes out for the year has definitely hurt.

Young is what Auburn is. They bring back like 47 of 52 listed on their depth chart. Going to be a nightmare for people going forward...

I think it also depends on the criteria of who is doing the listing. Are they looking just at starters or the two deep or just how many the school is graduating or actual play experience.

The correct way to do it is "percentage of snaps played returning" IMO -- but since snaps played isn't a recorded stat, it's basically impossible to do accurately. Tackles give you an idea -- but who knows how accurate that is, since you can't really check it...

I do have to say -- I didn't notice Skinner not being out there last Saturday and I thought I would. Definitely don't see a drop-off coming at that position. And I notice AJ Jefferson making a bunch of plays when he spells Autry. Assuming we move Cox back to FS in the offseason -- and we get Arrington back healthy -- we should be a damn good team on defense next year. I'd like to expect something out of Jay Hughes, but it's hard to expect much on an acchiles injury after what we've seen with Whitley.

Yeah I agree that would be a good way to do it but impossible to get accurate.

I was also glad to see Turtle step in and help out when he was in there. Thought he did a pretty nice job.

Whoa... Isn't auburn one of our wins next year?

Inexperienced would be a better word

Aside from Jackson and maybe Autry to an extent, I feel we have an adequate replacement at each position. In some cases, the seniors are already being outperformed. While J. Lewis has been in the program for a few years, we have done a poor job at getting him involved in the offense. He is finally getting several touches a week. Guys like Ross and Wilson have chances to be solid SEC WRs. Wilson already looks the part IMO. Having a true FR like C Young dominating the D-line also further reinforces the "young" angle. Young many not be the right word to describe the talent on our football team as a whole. However, the bulk of the talent we have will be returning next year.

It's the commentators that say it. It's because State's pyramid gets smaller as it gets higher. The majority of the talent is on the bottom layers.

You're right, by this time of the season the freshmen are really sophomores. But a warrior with a few winters under his belt should be noticeably more mature.

(referencing a TE in an argument might as well be a bulls-eye)

I agree with most of that. I do think we have a couple of good options for replacing Autry. With Lewis though, playing behind Bump and his fumbling problems had more to do with him not getting touches than the coaches. Even earlier this year he scared the crap out of me with the way he handled punts.
