Why doesn't Carroll just wait until after the spring to transfer?

He has to sit out next fall anyways so why not ride this spring out and see where he stands?</p>

...unless he has emotionally already detached himself from this team. If that is the case, he does both himself and us a favor by leaving before the Spring Semester. Giving himself an extra spring practice to prepare at another school prepares himself for a new beginning.

unless he asked to be released...maybe now he will have time to evaluate what he should do, ...gives him more freedom.

Like I said, I'm guessing on this.

Of course he would go through spring training. That was the point of the suggestion. He has to sit out 2009 anyway if he transfers to a D-I school. Why not go through Spring with Mullen and see if he can beat Tyson and Relf for the job?

he asked to be released about three days before Mullen was announced, but the main thing is that he was in a window of opportunity for himself...not MSU!
Had he not renounced his scholarship, during this period, he would have no personal options untill spring. Now, he can decide for himself, without restraints from MSU!,
Actually the more I think about it, his move was very smart...for him... Heck the next session of school does not start for several days...or weeks.. very smart on his part.
It gives HIM time time to decide.

Transferring and asking for the release are two different things. You are correct that he has options after being granted a release, but the thread is about his actual transfer. He can go through the off season program and see where he stands. If he still isn't happy he will most likely have the same options in May as he does now with the exception of some schools not having any spots left. However, I'm sure you think the use of exclamation marks really drove your point home.

I think we're both trying to say the same thing.
