why don't teams play

I've heard Paul Johnson say that he's seen EVERY possible defense possible against his option attack and can usually resolve it quickly. What the casual fan (which includes me - I just had someone explain it to me at a Navy game once and it was pretty fascinating to watch) doesn't realize is how quickly and easily Johnson can change the blocking schemes of his OL's based on what the defense is doing. Sometimes they'll run the same play, but will block it 4-5 different ways based on in-game changes keyed by the way the defense is playing.

If you care, here's a blog run by a former Navy OL - scroll down to get to the part where he dissects Ohio State's defensive plan and how it didn't really work against Navy. This shows how the option can actually use a team's defensive strength against it... Kinda like Tae-kwan-do!

& the Kang would just put a stick of dynamite in a bees nest, & inspire the team to beat the option

5 DTs against GT?

To slow the option down, your DT's have to not get blown out on double teams, and your LB's have to be able to get off blocks...you can stunt and be successful, but you can also stunt your way into an 80 yard TD run...

that's suppose to say 5 DL, not just Dts.. It seems to me that if I put dl to take away the dive, then my ends, LBs, and S can handle the QB and pitch man..

And defensive players blitzing from every direction. Instead of the defense not having a clue what the offense was doing, the offense wouldn't have a clue. Pull some Joe Lee moves on em!! I have found a way to stop Georgia Tech.</p>

we put 11 guys on defense this year when we play them. 8 just didn't work last year.

you have to kind of give them a taste of their own medicene and try to mix up your fronts and blitz packages.

Play some 4-3, then go to some 3-4, an occasional 5-2. Then try to have your LB's blitz from some weird places.

got away from what they do best- run the ball. They came out passing against LSU, and it blew up in their face.

ESPN was supposed to do a thing "all game long" where Paul Maguire dissected the GT flexbone offense, and one of the biggest criticisms of that offense is that you can't throw the ball. I think Johnson wanted to prove to everyone that you could, and it just didn't work that night.
