From Chris Low's Blog today (Ranking the SEC RBs):

12. Mississippi State: Anthony Dixon was the heartbeat of the Mississippi State offense last season, and replacing him won’t be easy. When the spring concluded, Robert Elliott and junior college newcomer Vick Ballard were running a neck-and-neck battle for the starting job. Elliott is one of those guys who just needs to figure it out, because he’s plenty talented. Redshirt freshman Montrell Conner (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) also had his moments in the spring.

Pretty much every pundit has said the same thing...I guess they're all just missing the boat. hmmm.

you're missing the point. Coach (and others) are saying that we won't miss Dixon as in his production. We will have 3 (or more) backs to replace his numbers, which essentially will make up for him leaving.Obviously we don't have one back that is good as Dixon (yet). One thing that you can always count on, is us having a good RB and I'm sure we will continue this.

Between Elliot, Conner, Perkins, and Ballard, we've got talent to adjust to whatever a defense is trying to do. Those guys can catch, run you over, or beat you to the corner. I think we finish in the Top 3 in the league in rushing yards per game this year. There is no way we have the worst RB core in the SEC.

and just about everybody else has three serviceable backs. Hell, we have Bolden, Davis, and Scott (all returning w/ carries last year). Doesn't mean we can discount losing Dexter.

If it's so much better, why didn't MState bench Dixon last year and do this? This is the same argument I heard in 2003 when Kamau Jackson was suspended for two games- when they moved Tommy Kelly down to Tackle, John blake and Ron Cooper were saying that "it's actuallybetter thatwe did that"....ahem, if it was "actually better", why notdo that to start with?

Fact is, we're gonna miss Dixon this year. Hopefully, the QB, WR, and other running backs will take up the slack.

in the I- you pretty much know it's a handoff to the TB or a pass...and your starting QB isnt much of a runner

In the Spread, we may run the TB, the QB may run it with the TB blocking while in a 3 WR set, we may motion the inside slot into the picture and hand it to him, or we might pass...

the point mullen is makingis that not having that one big time player to lean on will force him and the staff to use their creativityin running the offense.Mullen has proved in the past that he can adjust to the talent at hand. We won't be nearly as predictable. Make no mistake about it, Dixon is awesome...but in this offense and with the other players developing as they are, wewon't miss his production one bit. Personally, what we'll miss from him is his effectoff the field with the other players on the team if anything.

I don't agree with Coach in saying the offense will be better without Dixon but he still admits his production will be missed. You actually think he won't be missed one bit?

everyone knows we will miss Dixon (even coach34). But you have to move on and put a positive spin on it. Vick Ballard won't be flashy but he should be steady. Rob Elliott was good the last few games especially considering he was only 1 year removed from major knee surgery. Conner and Perkins will get carries. We will still have an effective run game. In some ways, maybe mullen means we won't be as predictable.

first?? Every damn one of them, that's how many! You put 4 very capable rb's in this offensive scheme with only one that anybody has film on, and you make it harder for teams to out scheme you, because they all bring something to the table that Dixon did, except really good quickness and some break away speed. Now that being said, we will miss his toughness and leadership, but I think, like Coach, we will be fine from a production standpoint, and we should have fresh legs by the 4th qtr. hands down compared to last year with Dixon. The only thing that we need to be weary of is the youth of this group. Strength in numbers.

how many DC's have you ever heard say- "I love when a team is so unpredictable...my guys really like not having any certain keys or comfort in knowing when the going gets tough- that offense is going to one certain guy. Not being able to clue in on one certain player really makes us a better defense"?

Nobody. Any DC is going to say he loves going against predictable offenses no matter how good that player is that they have. It's easier to gameplan for that. It's easier to predict what they will run and get more defenders to the football

True story- In the playoffs one year, we were playing a solid team that was keying on our best player. Everywhere he went, a couple of defenders went with him- he was that good. At Halftime, I told him to pretend to be hurt on the 1st play and we would get him out, so that we could put his back-up in to run a sideline swing pass. If we did it with him, they would have at least 2 people covering it. He ran the ball on the 1st play, and did one helluva acting job being hurt. The coaches carried him off the field, their crowd is cheering, ours is in shock (this kid is in the NFL now btw)...put his back-up in who they didnt fear as much, and ran the swing pass out of the backfield vs man coverage- 65 yard TD pass with nobody ever within 10 yards of him.

It's really funny on watching it on film as our starter jumps off the bench as the pass is thrown and is running down the sideline for 30 yards with the RB running for a TD

because I'm pretty sure it wasn't in the top half of the SEC

Phil Steele had us 7th in RB's and 12th in OL- how did that turn out in 2009?

spent 3-4 years telling us how over-rated and bad Dixon was and now they can't shut up about how good he was and how we won't replace him in the rest of the history of our football program. Damn that is one jumpy, cranky, nervous fanbase over there....reminds me of a fanbase that is breathing a sigh of relief that they play a schedule that would rank 8th in the SWAC because otherwise they would have some ***-whippins coming this fall. When you know your team is gonnna suck, you attack your rival in hopes they will suck too.

The closer I get to Labor Day, the more I believe we are gonna smack that gloating, bigotted *** all the way around Vaught Hemingway in November and it will set off a complete firestorm complete with Private Investigators next winter.

How about having 3-4 Anthony Dixon's on the team at RB? You would get the best of both worlds then.

One can dream can't they?

With regards to Low, I think a lot of his opinion is simply based off of the fact that our guys are unknowns at this time. And they will continue to be until they prove that they are capable players in the SEC, which I think there is a very good chance of that happening. Having seen them all play now- albeit in the spring game- I think Conner has the most potential. I would not be shocked at all if he becomes the bell cow of our team. And he will be pretty good when he is a fifth year senior.

I happen to agree that our offensive production won't suffer that much due to AD being gone, but your ego is beyond pathetic. I bet m f ers thru french fries at you in the high school cafeteria.

a lot people on here don't get it (you always have thecomplete loserdoucheswho like to throw around terms like "anti-state" or something), but i was just tweaking you. i see something like that and it makes me laugh just thinking about what i can start on here. i'm pretty sure you do the same thing. i think you understand my view on this topic and i get yours. i don't really think you're that far off - it's just the way you say it that gets so annoying.

Anyway - I don't believe that our RBs are 12th in the SEC either. And like I've been saying the whole time - we can still be plenty productive and miss Dixon at the same time. Production is not in question for the upcoming year IMO.

What we will miss of Dixon is the yards after contact. I can not speak on Vick and Ballard. However, Elliott is knocked off his feet by a stiff breeze. So for those three to get the numbers Dixon had (1391 yards and 12 TDs in 11 games), Vick and Ballard better be tough.

I look for Relf's rushing carries and yards to increase as a result.

Edit to add: I can not believe this goes on and on. It is absolutely stupid for anyone who has ever followed any sport to think any team losing it's best player is no big deal. I don't care what system you run or who your coach is. Does anybody think UF losing Tebow will not effect UF? Even as a pretty much one deminsional QB, he will be missed at UF. Same for Dixon at State.
