give up runs in the first inning? That's been a trend for a long time and they lose games because they can't close out the first inning without giving up runs. Just a thought.

for starting pitchers to start out a little rough before they settle down and get into a groove. Even at the MLB level.

You just have to hope that you can get through those first two innings without any damage.

and more times than not, it doesn't matter who starts, the Braves give up runs in the first. Beachy is having a rocky start right now giving up 2 homers in the first two innings. The commentators were talking before the game about his composure and ability to play under pressure, but I still think he is a little unproven. He has thrown over the middle several times, I think to try to get some cheap strikes, but twice it's bitten him.<div>
</div><div>On another note, the Braves are not a strong offensive team (granted, they have gotten better over the past few months), so they have a hard time coming back from a few runs. They are playing well, but they just can't get over the hump playing the bigger teams like the Phillies and Reds. The Pirates could potentially give them fits later this week, as well. </div>

One thing about the ESPN announcers- it's pretty rare that they are going to not say something positive about someone. Even if it's someone like Milton Bradley, who is about the biggest turd in the game, they may say something about his attitude issues, but then in the next breath they'll talk about how he is a five tool player and has a ton of potential.

But yeah- I think you are right about his inexperience and getting hit hard early because he is leaving pitches over the middle of the plate early being related. I think he is probably trying to establish the strike zone early, but he has to learn to hit the corners and establish those because anything right over the middle of the plate is going to be a strike anyway.

I'm actually wondering how Dontrelle Willis keeps showing up in MLB. He belongs in AAA. OK, he won 22 games at one point in time- what else has he done besides act like a goofball and give up home runs? Even the year he won Rookie of the Year, he was demoted to the bullpen for the playoffs. I remember a few years ago, there were rumors that the Cardinals were going to go after him in a trade. I actually screamed "NO!" at the TV when I heard that. Thankfully, it didn't happen.

But he is doing pretty well tonight... so far. We'll see how he and the Red's bullpen hold up down the stretch. The Braves definitely have the edge as far as depth in the bullpen, but the Braves need a signature road series win in the worst way right now. If they can find some solid hitting throughout their lineup instead of a few homeruns here and there and a couple of hot hitters that last for a few weeks, they will be doing well. That has been an issue for years, if not decades, though.
