Why not K. Payne from Kentucky?

Honestly, I don't follow basketball closely. Getting that out of the way from the start.

I've noticed the board doesn't seem to support the hire of K. Payne. He is considered (apparently) one of the top recruiters in the country, helped Oregon tremendously and was hired as an assistant coach on one of the most successful and storied college basketball programs. Is it just that he has no head coach experience?

Just some idle thoughts on a Thursday afternoon.</p>

Basketball staffs have three assistant coaches. Frequently one of them has a higher title indicating more responsibility. Payne is probably UK's third assistant. Maybe second, probably third. It's a big step from assistant to head coach as it is.

Tuesday night that Kenny Payne would be the guy and it would be an outstanding hire. I kept my mouth shut during the Drew debacle but if true this makes sense. Drew was never really considered and we (Scott and company) have known about Payne for some time now. Just waiting on the best time for him and his current team to announce. This makes the most sense.

Payne wants the job, has family working at MSU. Scott does not want to hire him at this point because of the AAU connection and other concerns. This worries me tremendously. I don't know how you can expect to be competitive without working through AAU. Furthermore, those of you who say he's the 2nd or 3rd on the list at UK, just an FYI, he's the highest paid assistant there so apparently Calipari considers him No. 1.....There is also heavy talk that Dampier is pushing hard for Payne but not getting his calls returned. Lots of issues here. It seems as though when ever a name comes out, that guy withdraws from consideration, so is this Scott not doing a good job of selling State or is he not correctly identifying candidates? Either way, if a hire is not made by Tuesday (24 Hours after the final game) then I would have to think there is a very serious problem somewhere. It is not money, it is not facilities, it is not a historically terrible team.

Then the job is basically his.

Of course he wants the job. Hell Coach O really wanted our job, which assistant coach in the country wouldn't want to cut his teeth as a head coach at a major conference basically guaranteeing a 5 million dollar pay day.

I have no idea how good a coach Payne can become, maybe really good.

It kind of reminds me of the old Lets make a deal. Basically what MSU has done has decided to give back the sure thing and take a chance to get what is behind curtain number 3. Considering that Coach34 has looked like a complete moron in all of this makes the Lets make a deal analogy fit the best, because picturing Coach as a contestant in the Lets Make a Deal while wearing a coaching out fit that doesn't fit seems about right.

Is that Payne is they guy that everyone wants to get the job from World Wide Wes to the smallest Cigar Boy, but Grasshopper is not on board. All of the pro-Payne folks are poisoning the well so that he will be the last guy we are left with.

I have absolutely no idea if this is truthful or not, just a rumor.

Codedawg is definately on the right track. There is alot of trouble brewing between the ole cigar boys and Scott. Its getting rough in the trenches and Pollard's list is not helping Scott much at all!!!!

Hiring Kenny Payne would be the equivalent of hiring a running backs coach from the Green Bay Packers!
