Other than the SEC money why don't we go the Notre Dame route. Become independent in college football. It would make the basketball season a lot better and more interesting. Then try to join the ACC in basketball. The SEC has been pretty weak there.
We would get to make our own football schedule. I'm not implying to load up on complete cupcakes. But try and organize a schedule full of winnable P-5 games plus 3 rival games.
Schedule
1.) Indiana or Illinois
2.) Vandy or Missouri
3.) Washington St. or Oregon St.
4.) Florida
5.) Duke
6.) Purdue or Rutgers
7.) Iowa St
8.) Tennessee
9.) Colorado
10.) Syracuse
11.) Kansas St. or Kansas
12.) Louisville
Play 2 games against each P-5 conference and 3 against 2 of them. You keep UL and UT because of the rivalries and add another in Indiana. You keep UF so we can at some point end the streak. All winniable games in most season's. When the programs talent and depth has improved start improving the strength of schedule.
Then you have moving to the ACC in basketball. The schedule would be immensely harder and more entertaining. It also would prepare the team better come tourney time. Who wouldn't like to have the chance to beat UL, Duke and UNC twice a year. A game against UL in Rupp every year.
I know it would never happen but I would absolutely love this on all levels.
