Why Not?

Other than the SEC money why don't we go the Notre Dame route. Become independent in college football. It would make the basketball season a lot better and more interesting. Then try to join the ACC in basketball. The SEC has been pretty weak there.

We would get to make our own football schedule. I'm not implying to load up on complete cupcakes. But try and organize a schedule full of winnable P-5 games plus 3 rival games.
Schedule
1.) Indiana or Illinois
2.) Vandy or Missouri
3.) Washington St. or Oregon St.
4.) Florida
5.) Duke
6.) Purdue or Rutgers
7.) Iowa St
8.) Tennessee
9.) Colorado
10.) Syracuse
11.) Kansas St. or Kansas
12.) Louisville
Play 2 games against each P-5 conference and 3 against 2 of them. You keep UL and UT because of the rivalries and add another in Indiana. You keep UF so we can at some point end the streak. All winniable games in most season's. When the programs talent and depth has improved start improving the strength of schedule.

Then you have moving to the ACC in basketball. The schedule would be immensely harder and more entertaining. It also would prepare the team better come tourney time. Who wouldn't like to have the chance to beat UL, Duke and UNC twice a year. A game against UL in Rupp every year.

I know it would never happen but I would absolutely love this on all levels.

We would beat two of the teams you mentioned. Kansas and Purdue. All of those other teams would blow us out, especially if we make no changes staff wise.

I'm guessing money is the reason Notre Dame remains independent in football. Joining the Big 10 might be similarly lucrative for Notre Dame, but if it is close, what is the point?

Kentucky belongs in the SEC.

This year you may be correct. But most years We have a chance in all of those games. Except Florida and Tennessee which we seem to never win and UL as long as Petrino is there.

SAME reason we didn't do the Louisville route and join the ACC. Four or five years ago, that would have made sense competition wise. That SEC money is one huge pot of gold.....and since UK doesn't go to bowl games, it's all pure pocket money.

I know we aren't remotely on the same page as the Irish. Even with them not being in a conference they are one of the top programs in revenue. One reason T.V. contract that they have to share with no-one.

Yeah ND has a contract with NBC that pays them more than we get from SEC. They can get contracts like that because they're a traditional power house school. UK couldn't sniff such a deal. We'd have to pay networks to show our games.

Not even a possibility. Not even something to slightly to consider. Not even something that has a .001% chance. We can do "why not"s all day long. And theres a good reason "why not". It would be financially idiotic and who the heck wants to schedule UK? They will have nothing to gain and alot to lose. And they could no longer call it an "SEC win" to make it sound better.

What would we do when they expand and make 4 super conferences and we get left out? Have to drop down to a lower level and lose money?
