Why wouldn't Mullen wait until after NSD to demote Wilson?

As far as recruting goes, the timing was bad. I realize they wanted

Collins to call the bowl game but it's not like we had some great performance. Wilson was a good recruiter.

It needed to be done prior to the convention coming up. A great place to troll for candidates. It would be hard to do that if the job wasn't actually open. Talking to people about an opening that isn't actually open would be the "auburn" method. That doesn't play well if made public.

Unless we wanted Wilson to leave, why not wait. Would he have left after NSF if their we're no openings. Also, why do all our recruits waiver if there isa asst coach change. Do none of our recruits want to play for Dan Mullen and or msu?

Exactly. And if you weren't going to do it after NSD, why not do it

shortly after the Egg Bowl?

I would think that it has more to do with hiring assistant coaches.

If we kept Wilson, didn't demote him until after NSD... That would limit his opportunities with other teams. I'm not so sure a great assistant would want to be put in the same situation.

Let's not over complicate things.

This didn't have to happen overnight. Our defense sucked this year. I'm sure Mullen pointed that out on more than one occasion during the season and suggested changes (remember, they were co-DCs making similar salaries) would be made if things didn't get better.

Wilson, knowing this was the case either put his name in the UGA hat or listened hard when they gave him a call. The Wilson to UGA move was likely inevitable by this time last week and Mullen gives Collins the field promotion knowing Wilson isn't staying put. I very seriously doubt we just dropped all this on Wilson the day of the bowl game and he decides to job hunt the next day.

I havent heard anything yet- but this is just a guess:

Mullen decided to go ahead and make a DC change.
When he made this decision, he decided to let Collins handle playcalling for the bowl game to see how he did under pressure.
Wilson had no intention of staying after being demoted and started calling around about jobs (or he may not have even had the option of staying)
Wilson found a job at Georgia

If they were co defensive coordinators as someone alluded to earlier, then why

would he have to be demoted? Couldn't Mullen just say the play calling was being switched from one to the other? Not that it really matters at this point how it happened because it's irrelevant. I do think it was probably the right call to make I just hope it doesn't hurt us in recruiting because the Rebs have all the momentum at this point and will use it to their advantage.

My point is not that anyone is not coming because Wilson goes to ga, although some have made those comments. I wonder why so few recruits say I'm coming to msu so Dan can coach me.

Co-DC's is mostly a title to get pay up

Losing your playcalling duties is a demotion- plain and simple- and is viewed as such. Plus, Wilson was the DC and had final say on everything. That also changed

The assistants do most of the recruiting and that's who the relationships are

developed with.

I do not think Gene or Steve will ever report in advance information on a recruit waivering. Don't think they know how to manage the questions or backlash. So how can we ever know who is waivering or not?

Is that the only place to find MSU information on the web? Gene and Steve?

No one is hearing ANYTHING about ANY recruits wavering, OK? Stop with the woe is me little Msu ***** attitude.

Wilson had ONE recruit committed -- Chris Jones -- who happens to be a very important recruit, but also one of the most loyal to MSU overall. Wilson missed on Za'Darius Smith who we had recruited for 18 months STEADILY. Wilson missed on Lavon Hooks -- who we didn't bother to start recruiting until NOVEMBER -- despite having a former MSU player as his position coach in JUCO who had constantly told us we needed to be after him. Those were 2 huge JUCO misses. We're going to miss on Rod Crayton and Andrew Billings as well -- the only 2 HS DTs we've gone after. If we were EVER going to get rid of him at a time it wouldn't kill our recruiting, this was the time to do it.

Wilson and Collins weren't both Co-DCs. Wilson was the DC, Collins was the Co-DC. It was the same way with Diaz, Wilson. The "Co" title was another way of saying "Assistant DC."

Exactly, don't know why this is so confusing to people. A co-pilot in an airplane is NOT equal to the pilot anymore than a co-DC on our staff is equal to the DC.

Well Steve says Hevesy was Jones recruiter. Well actually, he says Hevesy is the recruiter for Jones area. Was Wilson or Hevesy Jones' primary recruiter?

Both were.

Ever since the 2011 recruiting class debacle, we have 2 coaches assigned to every single recruit. The first one is the "area" coach(Hevesy in this case). The second one is the position coach(Wilson in this case). Both recruit the kid equally hard -- whichever he develops the better relationship with becoming the primary contact.

Wilson.

Everyone that is bitching about the whole "co" title we use are crazy. It allows us to get better coaches than we would normally get -- because their position is considered a promotion.

THAT is how we lured him away from his alma mater(Oklahoma) where he was DL and Special Teams coach. The promise of that promotion opportunity is what did it. Same basic story with Collins.

Would not be surprised to see another Co title for the next DL coach -- although Co-DC may be off the table now that Mullen sees how difficult it is for a guy to coach the DL and call defensive plays. Maybe Assistant HC or something similar though...

I'm starting to think that Oklahoma gave him the Melvin treatment.
