Will Auburn go after Tyler Russell?

My biggest fear in this game is that Auburn will attempt to knock Russell out of the game. They are thought by many opposing fans to play dirty with their late hits to the quarterback and Chizik will be desperate. The year they won the national championship they knocked 6 quarterbacks out of the game. We have to protect Russell. Our season depends on it.

All teams try to take out the best players from the other team and we, as fans, cheer it on..i.e Nikoe Whitley. I have no problem with trying to get a good hard hit as long as it is legal. However, if they start blatantly trying to injure one of our players such as late hits, going for the knees, head to head, etc. then I say return the 15 yard penalty favor and see how hard you can crumple of one of their best players.

I agree with everything you said in your post. There is a perception by some that Auburn likes to play particularly dirty. For instance, poking Taj Boyd in the eyes after his helmet came off last week.

If you go back and watch last year's game, Relf was slapped in the head on the bottom of every pile. Remember how many times he lost his helmet? I distinctly remember seeing one of AU's linemen slap Relf's helmet off his head while on the ground. They are crazy dirty.

ETA: That said, I hope Nickoe knocks somebody the 17 out.

And this year that would mean that the player losing the helmet would have to sit out a play. I have been wondering when we would see a gigantic play coming up and one of our key players out because his helmet was off the play before. Mark my words, it will happen this season.

The issue with that was chinstraps wasn't it? If a player has their helmet snapped on properly the helmet shouldn't come off.

My point was that we will have someone lose a helmet in a very critical part of the game this season and we lose them for the next play.

Can you imagine Russell losing his helmet on third down at the goal line in a situation where we absolutely have to go for it on 4th down because of the timing of the series? The MSU fan in me imagines it way to vividly.

I need to look at the new rule a bit closer though. Does anyone know if there can be a judgement call by the refs to allow a player to continue for the next play? For example, if a player is absolutely rocked on a play with an illegal hit, helmet to helmet, and loses his own helmet in the process, does he have to sit a play?

If the helmet comes off as a result of penalty (facemask, illegal hit, etc.), the player does not have to leave the field. As for Tajh Boyd, I read that he had to miss 3 plays as a result of this rule.

I believe the wording is that the player may not participate in the next play, just like when a player has to leave due to an injury. So, it doesn't matter if you call a timeout or not.

Also, a play is blown dead when a ball-carrier loses his helmet. If this happens in the last minute of a half and the loss of a helmet is the only reason to blow a play dead, there is an automatic 10-second run-off on the clock. You can call a timeout to prevent the run-off, but the player must still sit out a play. Also, if any other player loses his helmet, he must not participate in the rest of that particular play. Doing so will get a 15-yard penalty.

It already did in Auburn's game last week. Their QB lost his helmet and had to sit out 4th and Goal from the 1. They probably would have gone for it with him in but kicked the FG. Fortunately, Auburn was fresh out of miracles and couldn't drive the field to tie it up.

I'm more worried about our o-linemen's knees

Remember last year? I fully expect them to continue to try to blow out knees.

Dirtiest team in the country.

That wouldn't bother me because of Dak's legs. I think it's gonna happen on a 1st and goal from the 8 with two seconds where Tyler just drove us the length of the field in 42 seconds going 6-6.

Corey Lemonier lines up on both ends of the LOS. This will be, by far, the most important matchup of the game. If we can't block that dude, and I don't think Blaine Clausell can, we'll be greatly reduced in our play calling. The more I think about this matchup the worse I feel about the game. Corey has a great spin move and Russell will have to be certain not to hold the ball too long like he has been prone to doing in his career.
