I don't understand how people can question Cohen's ability as a baseball coach. Our baseball program was a monumental joke when he took over. I don't think people realize just how bad things were.

I do think all the micro-managing of every little thing when Cohen was coach drove people nuts even if he was building something great.

His last game as coach is a good example. We were leading Arizona 5-1 in an elimination game and took out Rooker for a defensive sub on a day where he homered twice. Arizona ties the game and sends it to extras and now we don’t have our hottest bat in the lineup. Stuff like that made people pull their hair out.

Well, that and his bunting fetish.

We all know Cohen likes to go "outside the box" (hate it for you Nellie) so there's no telling who he'll overthink is the answer for that program.

We need to go out and find another Cohen. That's the exact type coach the modern day MSU baseball program needs. We obviously can't do this Polk 2/Lemonis 'nice to the players' nonsense, it doesn't work. We need an attacking style of play with hard-nosed players. I don't care if it's not a big time name. Me personally I've always stumped for Lane Burroughs.

I was alright with Cohen hiring a 'recruiter' just so we could see if that worked for MSU. It worked during Polk 1, but that's only because we were just ahead of the game. Now that others have caught up, it just isn't our strategy. Even with our stadium and fanbase, we still just can't seem to really compete for the 5 star types unless they come from MS or AL. Florida, LSU, etc. just still seem to have recruiting advantages whether it's lottery or not. So, while I'm glad we've tried this Lemonis-crooter way, it's time to get away from it.

And a national title was a good consolation prize, I suppose. So there's that.

Cohen the baseball coach did a lot of great things for us. Making him AD was a really dumb move though.
Cohen is a disrupter, sort of like ole Doc F. He's got a knack for coming in and making some necessary changes and fixing things, but his 'way' kinda rubs people wrong. There are different degrees of this, obviously. Elon is probably at the top along with Doc. Cohen wasn't nearly as bad as those guys and when you're in your area of competency, it can be a good thing. That's why Cohen as a baseball coach succeeded and had some longevity.
As an AD, he was slightly out of the comfort zone. I still think he did some good things, but he also rubbed people wrong too, and of course the Nelle liberal stuff. But we absolutely needed to look at our athletics and money differently, and he brought a good perspective to that. We didn't listen of course, but eh.

Funny thing to me is, he's now in an AD spot where he can turn his inner dickhead loose. He doesn't have to worry nearly as much about the actual sports and money, in contrast, his biggest job is keeping the alumni in their place.

Auburn fired women's basketball coach Johnnie Harris today. Will Cohen do the easy thing and call Purcell? Remember that he is an Auburn graduate and the son-in-law of legendary Auburn women's coach Joe Ciampi.

If you're looking at Schaefer assistants, Carly seems to be doing OK

It was Coach Carly all along!**

Her first foray into the Power 5 world brought Thibault-DuDonis to Mississippi State University, where the Bulldogs made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA National Championship Game and brought the first-ever SEC Regular Season Championship to Starkville. During her tenure on Vic Schaefer’s coaching staff, Thibault-DuDonis was the recruiting coordinator that secured the top two classes in MSU history. Charged with the development of the Bulldogs’ back court, Thibault-DuDonis worked alongside 2018 First Team AP All-American Victoria Vivians, who went on to be the eighth overall selection in the 2018 WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever.

I would bet the house, farm, and my future heart transplant that Kellie Harper and her husband/assistant coach would NEVER come coach here. Just doubt she would ever consider us seriously.
If she's unemployed long enough (was fired April of '24) she may, as far as I know nobody has picked her up yet. Maybe she doesn't give a rats azz about Target or Publix........

Why not? It's a good job and it's been proven you can win here. It's not like a UConn or a South Carolina is going to be beating down her door to hire her right now.

Agree.

She was fired at both UT and NC State. Seemed to have no problem coaching at Missouri State, but she wouldn't coach at an SEC school that has played in two natty title games in reasonably recent years??

More a question of would we settle for her.

I think she'd come here. I'm not sure how much ESPN is paying her to be a halftime analyst on the SEC Network, but I have to feel like it's less than the $660,000+bonuses Sam is getting paid.

I actually think she could do well here. She did well at Tennessee, but the Lady Vol boosters are kind of delusional and think it's the 90's and the next Pat Summitt is walking through their doors any minute now.

On top of that, Derek Cody is their Director of Video Content. He graduated from State and held the same position at State from 14 - 19. Bring him back as well. While we're at it, just change our fight song to Boomer Sooner and call it a day.
Those Relentless videos during his tenure were awesome. The 'Hallelujah' one that covered the win over UConn was one of the best produced things State has ever done.

She has won everywhere she has Coached. She makes the NCAA often. $700k or more will draw attention.

I don't know if I've seen this in total ever. I remember the collective gasp when the shot went up and how loud I was screaming in World of Beers. Fantastic.
Don't remember seeing all of it either, that was excellent. Fun times those were. Good to see my girl Jazz again, my favorite player over the decade or so I've been watching.

Not sure I know what Cody's political BS was but my experience is that most of the "artists" that I've loved over the years don't exactly think like I do and thank goodness for that. Be some pretty bad music, films, etc. if they did.

In 5 years at Tennessee, Kellie Harper was 53-24 in SEC games with all 5 years having winning SEC records. Who knows what would have happened in 2020, but in the other 4, she then had 2 Sweet 16s.

We are in no position to say she's not good enough. If we can find someone even better great, but if we can't, by all means pursue her.

I don’t know that we will commit the resources to hire a real coach in women’s basketball.
We’ve had lots of conversations on here about whether we should. My sense is that we would go pretty much as cheap as possible. (Heck, that’s what we did in football and that sport indisputably matters most)

She'd be down the list, definitely not at the top but on there

Until a few weeks ago, I had no idea that UT fired her and was surprised that they did. She was doing well and was an alum. I wouldn’t be happy about the hire but I wouldn’t be mad either.
