Whoa! Wait a minute guys. I think something is getting lost in translation here maybe it's on my end but I was talking about the 3-4 as a whole defensive formation. NOT our version of it. Okay let's slow down a second here and regroup. Now before we go forward I'm speaking on the 3-4 as a concept to defending QBs like Manziel. And in a small way taking up for his scheme Vs. Manziel. Let me also say that in a sense he was right but he ALSO was not right. This thread title is that he was quoted saying the "scheme wasn't the problem it was the execution". The execution was off because he didn't play a NT/NG that doesn't titty fight and commands the attention of most interior linemen. Notice I said "didn't play". Now he actually has REALLY 2 guys that fit that bill. Neither played a snap in the game. For whatever reason they just didn't play. Quay Evans & Nick James are those young men. Especially the latter. Quay is actually a very good 2 technique DT (which is essentially the same thing in a 4 down linemen set). Maybe sometimes even as talented as they are they MIGHT not know their assignment which is probably why Cherrington and Boyd play NT as much as they do.And sometimes as a coach you are put in a pickle play a kid who is more talented than the starters but don't know the assignment or play the upperclassmen who know the assignment but aren'tas gifted. That's a tough dilemma to be placed in. I've never coached on this level but the amount of pressure put on him right now is probably pretty severe. But to you "that's why he gets the big bucks!"..

Cadaver you asked me a question and before I answer I'm going to remind you something that I know first hand. Being an assistant coach is a VERY difficult job ESPECIALLY a coordinator. If you don't mind I'm gonna share something with you. A team I was coaching was in the 1st rd of the playoffs a while back and he was a hot shot former passing game coordinator/offensive coordinator before he got this job. It was cold (as it usually is around here during post season) and it was the 3rd qtr and he wanted to speed up the tempo on offense. My DL had just been on the field for 15 plays and stopped the opposing offense on a 4th & 1 play in our territory and this team was a very physical football team. Now his OL were also the DL and he wanted to run a very fast paced drive. My kids were tired as hell and to make matters worse their defense had made an adjustment to show a single high safety and drop EVERYBODY in coverage. He kept throwing into it. Over and over! I kept telling him they were dropping everybody in coverage and he kept throwing into it. We tured it over and as the offense came out in a 2 tight set with a QB that as short as Bilbo Baggins began to break our Will. I asked him over and over to let me go with 5 down linemen hell even a set"bear" 4-6 he wouldn't let me. We turned the ball over 4 times in the 2nd half with 4 INTS as he KEPT throwing into at sometimes an 8 man coverage. My point is that Coach Diaz & Coach Wilson run the same thing.....probably because they understand the "defensive scheme is part of the head coach's strategy" that's good ole coach speak for "do what the boss says". So what I would do is do what Coach Mullen wanted me to. But i do actually like the philosophy of staying in a nickel package and blitz the middle NOT the outside. Most good pocket QBs don't mind pressure from the backside but absolutely HATE pressure in their faces as it makes them drop their perifriauls from the route to gauge the distance from pressure to throw. But i wouldn't just let JB & Slay stay in man. You're going to have to mix up your sets & personnel. I expect to see McCardell & Preston Smith in at DE instead of Eulls. Sorry my post was so long.

Fair enough. Thanks
