He seems to be a good recruiter, already knows the schemes and most importantly I trust !%!'s judgement. Now come on back CJ.

This may allow us to make another Chris Wilson-type hire for that position, which would be big. I think we all know that the only way we got Wilson from Oklahoma was the Co-DC title. Maybe we can hire away a big time LB coach from another school.

We are lucky enough to have a good candidate already on staff, so I think the stability at the DC is a good thing on the recruiting front. I hope they already have some good candidates in mind to fill out the staff with an outside hire relatively quick.

It seems Mullens puts a lot of emphasis on having a wide range of football philosophies on board & exploring new ideas. I think hiring a position coach with a co-DC title emphasizes/encourages creativity amongst the staff.

Keep getting good, young, up and coming coordinators, and keep replacing them in house by making them Co DCs, them promoting them. It's a brilliant idea.

We can't afford to lose Wilson after next year's season, because Channing Ward and Quay Evans love him.

The Co-DC just makes it so tough to hold onto guys in the off season.

Hire someone with similar ideas, integrate them into your defensive scheme, and promote from within to maintain continuity. That way you aren't changing schemes and terminology every time someone leaves. We've got that system by default with Mullen on the offensive side. I think it's smart when there is only limited time to coach players in college.

It shouldn't piss anyone off to the point of leaving if they are hired knowing that philosophy up front. If anything it'd be a plus to get an up and comer position coach or a DCof a small school. Look what it did for Manny.

but when we're successful (which usually involves playing solid defense), I'm pretty certain we can expect high turnover among the assistants. If there's a clear successor, it can't do anything but help recruiting.

And I was mostly joking, but what the heck, it's January.

Bring in the initial person who can run it by themselves and train everyone else. Then when they leave, promote the next guy in line, andthey start training the next people in line. Then try and retain the person in charge as long as possible before you have to promote the next guy.

Simple business strategy applied to football coaching, and I think it's agreat idea. Dan needs to keep finding people who can run the defense by themselves, and who can also be an extension of Mullenwithout him having to actually be there.

of the inability to give one guy a raise and not the other. Let's say next year, someone comes calling wilson that we could compete with salary wise. If we have to give both DC's a raise we won't be able to hang on to him. We need to have a plan to compete with other schools looking to take ourcoaches away.

but I don't know that anyone know it to be a fact.

In fact, if you look into it, we are actually using "co-" more to mean "assistant". In the media guide and on the website, Diaz is listed as "Defensive Coordinator". So Im not sold that we have to have equal pay or equal raises.

Diaz was the Defensive Coordinator, not the Co-Defensive Coordinator. Wilson was the only one with Co- in front of the title. So we could easily pay one more than the other. In fact, I'd be surprised if we weren't paying Diaz more than we were Wilson last year. It's been reported that Diaz made $260K last season. If someone wants to look up what Wilson was paid, have at it (in other words I'm too lazy to look it up myself).</p>
