And continue DL duties, per Marcello.

What a media nightmare!

How was this leaked to Marcello before Mullen could hold a presser about it?

hope not

He's a good D-line coach and a good recruiter. He is probably the highest paid Dline coach in the nation now. This really couldn't have worked out any better for us.

Once again, even though 34 was wrong, he was right

he said Wilson wouldn't be fired...

Wilson was DL coach at Oklahoma, then came to MSU for the same position....

then got promoted, now demoted. Hmmm. I'm thinking if a big school is in need of a DL coach and come calling, Wilson's going. He cannot be happy about this.

I hope we go with one DC the rest of Mullen's tenure.

I liked the Co DC thing up until this year. The whole purpose of it was to provide continuity to recruits if the main guy calling plays leaves. We needed recruits and to keep them comfortable at MSU we needed that continuity. Now that we've gotten over the 8 win hump twice in 3 years, it's time to move forward by having 1 DC and actually do a national coaching search from this point forward.

Now the next order of business is to pay our coordinators and position coaches more. Time to make us look more attractive by paying comparable salaries to our assistants. If we can do that, we can get some bigger names and attract more attention to what we are building at MSU.

Absolutely great move by Mullen if in fact he is able to pull this arrangement off. Best of both worlds. I was impressed with Collins in bowl game.

he was actually DE coach and special teams cordinator at Oklahoma in 2009

Could this be coming into focus now?

He's an excellent DL coach and recruiter -- when he can actually focus on THOSE things. I think the work load of DC while trying to make substitutions on the DL, etc...was just too much for him in a game setting. There's a reason that 99% of every DC you see double as linebackers coach, not DL coach.

Chavis(LSU) - LB/DC
Smart(Alabama) - LB/DC
BVG(formerly Au and UGA) - LB/DC
Grantham(UGA) - OLB/DC
Johnson(Au, formerly MSU and USCe) - LB/DC

Who takes a demotion like that and stays? I really, really doubt he stays much past signing day, if that long. I could see someone picking him up in the next two weeks and trying to grab his recruits.

$100 to $50 says that he's gone by next Friday. Being demoted is a derailment on a career track. At this point in his career, money is not as important as position. Wilson desires to be a HC one day. Staying at MSU would make that difficult. When a HC demotes a guy, he is basically saying "you dont fit here." Assist. HC is the only thing that keeps Wilson.

Where could he go? UGA has a d-line opening.

They could match his salary. Where else has an opportunity with the facilities and salary combo?

I'm not suggesting he isn't going to leave, but it's not like he can just pack up and have a pick of multiple great jobs.

I'd have to know his frame of mind to make that call.

If he stays, he is too much of a puss to coach defense.

If his ambition is to be a HC, then he needs to move on to wherever he can keep the D-coord title. What if he enjoys making good money being a position coach? I could see somebody enjoying coaching a small group and recruiting while not having to worry about coaching an entire side of the ball or entire team. It might give you a few more hours with the wife and kids each week, or at least help you sleep a little better at night. If he's good at recruiting and coaching d-line and that's what he wanted to do with his life, good for him.

Of course, I'm not him, so I have no idea what he's thinking. I just don't think you can write someone off quickly like that if they did decide to be a position coach. Not everyone is out to conquer the football world and you can still be a great position coach even if you aren't.

DS, i really enjoy this board. I would appreciate your letting me hang around. I have a different opinion than most. I wish Mullen, Wilson, Coliins and especially the bulldogs the best.

Maybe Wilson realizes what we have been saying. His strengths are DL and recruiting. Props to him if this is the case. Just because he's not a great DC doesn't mean he can't eventually become a HC. I would actually think him recognizing his strengths makes him a better HC candidate than him being stubborn about it aka Crooms.

Mullen is making all the right moves, the greatest coach in football. The future is bright. Wilson can't coach. Brewster is the greatest. NU was just lucky to score against Collin's defense. Les needs to go (take Ray with him). Tyler should only carry Dak's jockstrap. Smoot could drive (maybe in his Bentley) this program to the national championship, coaches are done at 50, we have better players on the bench than Alabama has on the field, damn we was almost 8-0....now that's good Bulldog posting.

Maybe this is just wishful thinking, but whatever the outcome of this, I seriously, seriously doubt the move would have been made when it was if Mullen thought it would affect Jones' recruitment.
