what are the chances that Mullen will go after the kid from Tupelo and what's his commitment to LSU looking like

as a 'soft verbal', then you can say his commitment is up in the air. He stated right after Croom resigned that he was going to take other visits. No big deal. He owes it to himself to take all of his visits. What Veasey reported today is not new news. Russell is excited about Mullen and was Mullen's #1 recruiter this past week in Mobile. I feel confident we will get him and even if we don't, we now have 2 coaches on our staff who will be able to coach up whatever other quarterback they decide to bring on board. That's something we have NEVER had in our entire history. I even have confidence they will be able to make Real Deal servicable, so stop freaking out, everybody, we are going to be fine.

I still think he'll probably wind up at MSU, but Mullen needs to be working the backup plan too, as I'm sure he is.

for him to get to Baton Rouge. My LSU friends tell me that the kid from Texas is the one they're pinning their hopes on. They still seem to be scratching their heads why Garrett chose LSU. It's almost like they couldn't care less. On the other hand, I don't know how much they're in the know. Now if he were to repent and confess his sins big time, I'd welcome him back to State.

If you look at most schools, when there is an HC change there are actually very few recruit losses (although I expect Auburn may be the exception). The current staff usually has a sort of 1-2-3 list and has communicated that to the recruits. These are the kids most likely to move on with a coaching change.

So, if you are recruiting a 4-star QB, but haven't quite reeled him in, you might tell a 3-star kid, "We'd like to have you, but we only have room for one QB this year and Rocky Steelarm is our guy. You can greyshirt if you want, but we might not have a schollie until next January." Old coach leaves, new coach comes in. He continues to pursue Rocky, but his number two is a bit hazier and might actually drop off to a number three.

Here is the only problem that I would see with Russell over the next six or seven weeks. I KNOW that he was reaching out to programs after Croom left. It was also being done from the slant of wanting the staff to call him as opposed him contacting the staff. Guys do this when they want to be able to say to their HS or their recruiter that the other coaches called him, not the reverse. Still, having said that, I presume he is yours to lose.

if the kid says he's still keeping his options open, more or less, then it's not a done deal...

as well, Bumphis, Patterson, Smith, etc.
This class for Mullen is so huge in my opinion.
I hope Mullen has a backup plan for a QB if this dont work out.

Garrett must have gotten really pissed off at Croom.

Is RS and being Russell's back-up for three years (assuming Russell plays as a true Fr.) and then starting as a senior all THAT bad?

have him as the better future QB? I remember Goat bragging about him when he was like a sophomore in high school, how he was the future. People had been building up garrett for years. Didn't his dad even get almost run out of office for the bulldog club or whatever it is when he committed to LSU?

A lot of that was sheep propaganda from Gene. I think Gene figured he would in all likelihood come to MSU because he was a State fan and his Dad was big in the Bulldog Club, plus he comes from one of the larger towns in Mississippi at one of the better high schools in the state. So, basically Gene was building him up until signing day this year but obviously Croom screwed it up somehow.

Saban redshirted a HSAA quarterback this year in Star Jackson. I am too sleepy to look it up but I think he was a Rivals or Scout five star quarterback. Russell if probably not scared of the competition though.

If I were a 5-star prospect, I'd take every visit I could. Free food, good looking women, your face on the Jumbotron. Man, you get one chance at this stuff.

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit some of these places and it's a day out of school. I know if it were me a few years ago and I were being recruited by all the big boys, I'd have taken all my visits as well. But at the end of the day, it wouldn't have been a big deal, as I'd have signed with State because that's where my heart is. I'm betting it's pretty much the same for Russell. The only visit that worries me even a hair is Bama. There's no telling how much Saban will offer him once he's there.

Garrett better hope Bumphis goes with him LSU. He is way over rated and that is not a snubbed opinion. Its an opinion base on the fact that he is over rated.
