With The Right Coach, Would The Triple Option Work Here?

I am watching the Air Force game right now (2nd favorite team) and they are one of the teams that has to do way more with less than most any other team. Despite that, they remain competitive with most teams. I know the option didn't work very well under Curry, but maybe a coach that is use to working with less talent could succeed with it here. Their coach is Troy Calhoun and he has a 69-50 record at Air Force with a bowl game in 8 of his 9 years. They are 2-0 so far this year.

Would that be an option worth considering? Paul Johnson has been pretty successful at Georgia Tech with 7 bowls in 8 years. He has a record there of 64-45. He runs an option offense and he did it using lesser players at Navy just like Calhoun at Air Force. So do you all think Calhoun would be on the list if we replace Stoops after this year?

I just don't think we are going to get the big name like everyone wants so we might have to go after the head coach from a lesser conference. He has been an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach from most of 1997-2006 with NFL coaching experience in there before being named head coach of Air Force in 2007. Might be an outside the box candidate.

No because you can't recruit to it. The Air Force is a bit different because their recruiting both for better and worse is different anyway. In the SEC you have to play a system that allows you to put players in a position to get to the NFL. The offense we ran tonight looked good. Just keep it as is.

Hey mine too! I attended AFA, but didn't graduate. I think that's where my love of college fball started, home games were mandatory attendance. I think it works anywhere because teams have a hard time getting ready for it. Plus it makes recruiting a lot easier. You recruit smaller quicker linemen and there are a ton of high school option QBs to choose from every year.

Maybe not the triple option, but I liked the rushing attack we displayed tonight. I would like this to be our identity moving forward. Maybe it helps our team be more physical as well.

I was in the Air Force so I feel like it is my college even though I didn't go to the Air Force Academy. Your points are why I think it could work. We will never recruit to the level of teams like Florida, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, etc. We can't get the big uglies like they can. Yet a coach like Paul Johnson has been to the Orange Bowl with the players he gets at Georgia Tech. Calhoun coached 4 years in the NFL so I'm sure he can still help get guys to the pros. It's not like we put a ton of players in the NFL with the offenses we've been running. If we can't get a big name coach, I wouldn't be upset going after Calhoun.

Tech is not in the SEC.

Major front 7's to deal with.

No, Urban made the spread option work with Tebow, but you saw when Tebow left it all went to hell.

I'll counter with this:

One out of conference game doesn't necessarily receive the annual league opponent scouting and preparation for a system offense year in and year out.

I don't disagree, but even if you see it every year it's hard to prepare for it when your own team isn't able to replicate it at a high level in practice.

In 2014 they beat:

#7 Miss St in Orange Bowl
#9 Georgia on the road
#19 Clemson
NR VT
NR Miami
NR NC State
NR Pitt

That is 2 of the top SEC teams included in their best wins. How often have we beat 2 top 10 SEC teams in the same season with one on the road and one at a neutral site? Plus another top 20 win in conference. Those 7 teams were all bowl teams. I doubt we ever have beat 7 bowl teams in the same season. It may not be a full SEC schedule, but those SEC teams they played had plenty of film to study and still lost. I still think an option offense could work for us. It might not put us at the top of the SEC but what has in the past 40 years?

I just think we have a long ways to go oline-wise to ever be a run oriented offense.
