None of these women y'all hipsters are talking about are on the radio.
That's what I was thinking about a lot of these.

I didn't include any Motown, Gospel or Broadway ladies. It's just a given that they all can sing their asses off.

Good stuff by some of you.

Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes
Read the whole thread to see if she got any mentions. She's unique enough that not everyone is going to like her but I'm a big fan. I'll add Elle King as well with the same opinion.

Just a personal observation, modern country has some really talented females but the music is just such horrible garbage that it's a complete waste. Hope they're making the money.

Might sound misogynist, but there aren't too many for me (unless I just forgot about them)

- Mariah Carey - girl can sing
- Annie Lenox
- Alison Krauss
- Heart
- Chick from Evanescence

Obviously not much recent stuff.

To be fair. I like to sing along and most ladies would be out of my range, except Anne Murray and Karen Carpenter (guilty pleasure)

Fleetwood Mac
Carpenters
Whitney Houston
LeeAnn Rimes
Lady Antebellum
Heart
Abba
Staple Singers
Joss Stone
Norah Jones
Toni Braxton
Mary J. Blige
Janis Joplin
Missy Elliot

Not sure if serious...if you grew up on 90s R&B, you'd get it.

By the way, if anyone knows someone named Jeff Gibson that had tickets to the Pixies show at the UK student center about 20 years ago and somebody stole their tickets please let me know. I still kind of feel bad about it today and will apologize. They challenged us to get in.

That's a joke Gallagher tells, and Gallagher is AWFUL, ergo, you are awful.
Little known fact. She had a 50,000 square foot house when she died but they could only get $500,000 for it. Apparently it isn't easy selling a house without a kitchen.

Many of these have already been mentioned. But here is this music junkie's list of very talented, very enjoyable, female musicians.

Janis Joplin
Bessie Smith
Billie Holiday
Susan Tedeschi
Bonnie Raitt
Ana Popovic
Etta James
Joan Jett
Aretha Frankiln
Samantha Fish
Beth Hart
Kelly Richey
Sue Foley
Carole King

Good list Joe. Let's add Koko Taylor to it.

Over the Rhine
Miranda Lambert
Stevie Nicks (both in and out of Fleetwood Mac)
Lucinda Williams (Blue = possibly the saddest sung ever sung)
Mary Chapin Carpenter
The Carpenters
Diana Ross and the Supremes
k d Lang
Damn near any of the Phil Spector bands

OTOH, those below are among artists who I would run the car into the nearest concrete wall rather than listen to them sing:

Heart
Joan Jett
Pat Benatar

Mama Cass had to have talent because she was never going to get by on looks. Michele Phillips on the other hand was rather fetching.

Susan Tedeschi deserves her own thread apart from all over women artists. Same goes for her husband.

Honey Honey is a duo fronted by a woman. They are pretty good
